The characters are two dimensional and the female lead Evaline is a twit and a ninny with not a shred of real character and absolutely no sense of pride or self worth. If you're looking for a strong female lead I suggest you read Lassie. The male lead has not a shred of honor and that at least makes him interesting.

Heiress Evaline Pinchley, forced to attend a house party by her pushy aunt who wants her to buy a title, thinks that she has met the disappointing rake Viscount Randolph Dashford (it's his friend). It's her 25th birthday - she can now take control of her money, free herself of her greedy guardians, find her cousin Sophie, and buy the estate ("Loveland") of her notorious but wonderful grandmamma. In her worn bedclothes, Evaline swipes a bottle of Madeira, and sneaks into a moonlit garden to celebrate. Here's the first of the misunderstandings: she's getting gloriously drunk when the real Lord wanders out to the garden and sees a lovely moonlit servant. They exchange increasingly heated caresses until Evaline passes out. Dashford sneaks her into his bedchamber and bed where she remains dead to the world. He's honorable to the core so he tamps down his frustration and lets her sleep. (His persona as a dissolute rake who has spent his fortune on women and gambling has been created to push his unwanted betrothed, Claudia, to break the engagement.) When the innocent Evaline awakens with a fierce hangover alone in a strange room and misreads an enigmatic note propped up against a restorative drink, she thinks that she has been ravished, and flees to the safety of her room for the remainder of the day. Dash, meanwhile, spends the day trying to locate the new servant girl. Later that evening, Evaline goes to the library to look for some scientific reading matter to see if she is pregnant and instead becomes immersed in a randy book, complete with explicit drawings. Dash finally finds his servant girl in the library, and not able to help themselves, they take up where they left off until they are interrupted (poor Dash)! But now he has learned her name. And so it's one thing after another (and one interruption after another): People's overheard conversations are misconstrued; Evaline is outfoxed time and again by Claudia and her aunt, and Dash thinks the worst of her motives (but can't help himself when he's around her). A flood maroons the houseguests - now including a Mr. Carrington, Evaline's solicitor, and a snake named Ellard Driscol who's determined to compromise Evaline. The flood sends Evaline off to rescue Dash who's trapped in Loveland's cellar. Together they discover Loveland's treasure and finally all the threads of intrigue are untangled. Entertaining!

Not my favorite "meet cute". Otherwise it was an enjoyable romp.

Mistress By Mistake stood out from the many Regency romances I've read due to the originality of the plot and the lighthearted tone. I also loved the characters, finding them both amusing and appealing. It was great fun watching Evaline and Lord Dashford work toward their happily ever after. I was also intrigued by Lord Rastmoor and delighted to find (in the preview excerpt at the end of the book) that he will star in his own romance, Damsel in Disquise, which is scheduled to come out some time this summer. I look forward to reading many more books by Susan Gee Heino!

In 1816 heiress Evaline Pinchley looks forward to her birthday coming soon when she reaches the age where she will control her money; she has no plans to marry some wastrel after her wealth. Lord Dashford is tired of matchmakinging moms trying to get their daughters married to him because of his money; he decides to let everyone believe he is broke. Evaline's Aunt Bella drags her to a party at the Dashford estate. She gets drunk in his garden to celebrate her liberation birthday. He sneaks out to his garden for a respite from the horde of marriage mommas. The pair accidentally meets in the garden. The next morning she awakens in his bed. However, when his former fiancé arrives proclaiming he is hers; Evaline acquiesces but decides to taste another night in his bed. This is an amusing Regency romance starring two individuals who deny love and marriage but cannot resist the sexual lure of the other. The story line is fast-paced as the lead couple with a strong support cast (her family and his two best friends) make for an amusing tale of I'm Not in Love only in lust. Susan Gee Heino provides sub-genre fans with a wonderful historical. Harriet Klausner
