Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Warriors and Seekers series.

Wayne McLoughlin studied art at San Diego State University and has worked as a writer and illustrator for such magazines as Esquire and National Lampoon. His books for children include Fireflies, by Alice Hoffman, Here is the Wetland, by Madeleine Dunphy (both Hyperion), and Loch, by Paul Zindel. He lives with his wife and daughter in Bellows Falls, Vermont.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    Just Stop

Stop role playing in the reviews. There are hundreds of forums for that or you could make your own. It's really annoying when I'm looking for ACTUAL reviews to see if I want to buy a book and I come across poorly written rp posts. I enjoy rping but this isn't the place for it. Please just STOP.

Nope. I'm not a clan cat. I think all of you are depressed homies who want a fake life... this is for book reviews and don't even try to argue because you are doing it on the Barnes & Noble website or on a nook. Please be thoughtful because there are other better places to do this. Wouldn't you rather be able to see your own clan? Try Wolfhome, an online chatroom based on your character being a wolf. Or, even better, Animal Jam, where you can do lots of stuff instead of READING. I like reading, but some people dread it. On Animal Jam, you can choose a variety of animals. Please reply if you agree, and please think about the people, who have money burning a hole in their pocket not knowing how to spend it. They have a bit more authority than you do. They might be buying it and you might not. Thanj you uf yoy read this far and understand how I feel. (P.S. you can curse on Wolfhome :P) Thanks 4 readin'!!!!! Byez!!!!!

First of all, I know how much you guys like Warriors, I understand this. But.... This is just dumb. First of all, your roleplaying, I know its fun... But um, you need to use a ROLEPLAY SITE! I'm tired of it. There are million of websites you can use. Second, its pretty much spam. Please... Just STOP. Its for reviews! Not for dumb roleplayers who want to be Scourges mate! UGH. Goodbye

    Good Book

This is a good book. I thought it was going to be longer (I finished it in one day), but overall it was great in describing what happened to RiverClan (My favorite Clan!) after the water returned to the lake in Mistyfoot/Mistystar's perspective.

Good book but i am afraid that the book was to short for my liking yet i would still recomend this book to someone who is into the warriors series. I love you erin hunter whoever you are for creating the warriors series.

This book is about the time when lepordstar dies and mistyfoot becomes the leader. Also this book talks about all of the strugles that mistystar and riverclan has to go through. In this book stonefurs spirit comes back to help mistystar get through the drought and the struggles that the clan leader gos through. I wish that this book was a bit longer. I love the warriors series and i cant wait for the new section to come out (dawn if the warriors). Erin hunter is a very inspiring author and i hope that alot of other kids are able to read and love all of her books like i did.

    not as good as expected

While a cute story, it wasn't as good as other "Warriors" books. Should have been presented as a short story. I think it was deceptive to call this a book, as almost 1/3 of it was basically ads for other Erin Hunter books!

    Plz adopt me!

Panting hard, Honeykit crouched under a rosebush, her heart pounding in her head. The two month old kit replayed the horrifying scene in her head unwillingly-the dog ripping out her father's throat, then her mother's, all in front of her. She shivered, a tear rolling down her golden cheek. They had died to protect her. It was her fault they were gone. All her fault.
She closed her blue eyes, never wanting to open them again. Life was not worth living. Not with the guilt she carried now.

    Unless...
YOU adopted this poor, poor kit! Do you live in an active Clan, where the cats are exepting and there are lots of other kits to play with? Then adopt Honeykit today! Respond, "to Honeykit" and state your name and Clan. Help Honeykit people!
