Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
It may not seem possible for something as small as a period at the end of a sentence to have a brain, esophagus, heart, gut, ovaries and other parts, but it is true. Mites fall into this category. They range from the size of a period to the size of a raisin. In this book from the "Arachnid World" series, readers will be able to get a good look at mites and their parts, both inside and out. Especially interesting is the "cut-away" illustration that shows and labels detailed parts of a mite. Mite metamorphosis is explained well and readers can learn that mite eggs are inside the female and that the mites are born alive. Several kinds of mites are featured. These include red mites, gall mites, red velvet mites, dust mites, chiggers, and whirligig mites, named because of how they move in a spiral path to get to their prey. Fantastic photo close-ups, some showing neon mites, greatly add to the text. End matter is made up of an index, glossary, a page about other sneaky arachnids, resources, and an activity that allows readers to see how a two-spotted spider mite population multiplies. This book is well researched and the text has been supported by experts. It makes a good supplement to science lessons. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
