While other music trends received all the media attention, electronica, house, trance, and similar club styles were not-so-quietly taking Christian audiences by storm. Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
While other music trends received all the media attention, electronica, house, trance, and similar club styles were not-so-quietly taking Christian audiences by storm. With the success of U.K.-bred DJ artists such as Andy Hunter, ForeFront Records has entered the club circuit with Mixdown, dance remixes of some pop and rock hits from the industry's biggest names. It's an interesting idea that works best on songs such as tait's "Alibi," Audio Adrenaline's "Big House," and the Benjamin Gate's "The Calling," where the music is already fun, danceable, and lighthearted. Another winner is Stacie Orrico's "Ride," so soulful and full of rich dance grooves that it would easily be at home on a secular dance club floor. Folk-rock oriented artists like Jennifer Knapp and Rebecca St. James fare less well with the electronic treatment; the synthesized version of songs like "Undo Me" and "Lean On" aren't very danceable, and the electronic pulses strip them of much of their original appeal. The Christian club scene is fairly limited, so one suspects the market for a release like Mixdown is probably church youth groups and other Christian organizations that want to host a "rave" of their own. Still, it's encouraging to see a label like ForeFront explore a rapidly growing trend in the Christian scene. As more DJs enter the Christian marketplace, perhaps the industry won't have to retool its old hits into club music and will instead generate more fresh material.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Forefront's Mixdown presents CCM and alternative CCM hits in a dance-mix format. Even though the mix generally leans toward dance-pop and very basic trance, hip-hop, and house styles, it still works surprisingly well, especially on tracks like Audio Adrenaline's "Big House," Stacie Orrico's "Ride," Out of Eden's "Different Now," and dc Talk's "Socially Acceptable." The collection almost loses its credibility with the cheesy, untitled closing track, which basically just serves as an advertisement for the album after the fact. Nevertheless, Mixdown's reinterpretations of songs by Smokie Norful, Switchfoot, Rebecca St. James, and Tobymac as club tracks are still pretty impressive. Overall, the album should please CCM fans looking for a new twist on tracks from their favorite artists.
