I've loved this series since the beginning, the circle of friends, the romance, the small town atmosphere have been very alluring, with the tales mixed with love, passion, a little danger, some heartbreak, and lots of humor. I knew that if and when Caroline and Josh got their own story, it would be emotional. And it was, touching and heartbreaking. Yet the story was so brilliantly mixed with humor - that bright and sunny outlook Josh has on life that was infectious - it didn't leave much room for angst, desperation, and hopelessness that Caroline could have rightfully been feeling. Instead, Josh helped her find herself again, helped her heal, and move forward with her life. I absolutely adored Caroline and Josh together, the dry humor, play with words, the passion they had for each other, and the desserts they shared. Josh was just perfect for her, his tenderness and sensitivity towards her past, her life situation, his patience, his devotion to her, protectiveness, and willingness to fight for her, for them and their future, and against the system that had put her in the situation she was in, just left me charmed and wanting to cheer for them. The betrayal and humiliation Caroline had to suffer for her willingness to serve her country were unthinkable, the consequences of the events hard to understand, the injustice infuriating. But the sensitive matter was delicately handled in the story, with respect towards the victim and hope for the healing. I inhaled this story, avidly hanging on each moment. I wanted to savor it, enjoy every word, and at the same time, I was eager for Caroline to find peace of mind, for Josh and her to have a chance. Every emotion was involved as I read the book, there were chuckles and smiles, adoration, anger towards the system, fear of surviving, and at the lowest point, there were tears (or more like sobbing). It might have been an emotional roll-a-coaster, but it was worth each and every bump on the road, that Josh and Caroline had to suffer on their way towards their future. The story left me elated and exhilarated, eagerly waiting for more: A must-read series for me ~ Five Spoons

As posted on The Smutty Kitty reviewed by KittyKelly 4 out of 5 Licks I am so excited this book is finally here!! I've been dying for Josh's story since his accident in the Independence Falls series. I fell in love with him and couldn't wait for his story. I was super sad when Sara completed the IF series and his story wasn't told, but then he popped up in the Second Shot series and I had everything crossed. Josh is seriously the most patient character I think I've ever read about. Most of the heroes you read about these days are alpha males or just plane a** hats, but not Josh. While everyone else is walking on eggshells around Caroline he treats her like a regular old human without pushing her boundaries. Caroline is running from her past and terrified she will be caught and punished for going AWOL. She is scared to move forward, but Josh knows he can be the one to bring her forward and help her. I couldn't imagine how Sara was going to get around the AWOL issue. Turns out she doesn't try to skirt it, Caroline winds up turning herself in and Josh does everything he can to free her. I really enjoyed watching Caroline move forward and seeing Josh help her along the way. As always I really enjoyed what Sara brought to the table and I can't wait to read more from her.

Reclaiming your life after tragedy would be difficult for anyone. Piecing your life back together after sexual assault takes on a new level of impossible. Caroline Andrews was assaulted while deployed overseas. In facing her accuser, she finds that the unit she’d worked with has turned their backs on her. A year spent in hiding after going AWOL, she’s still looking over her shoulder, both for her attacker and the military police. Josh Summers got a second chance at life after an accident at work put him in a coma and robbed him of his short-term memory. Months of therapy taught him to never give up, and appreciate life. He’s ready to settle down and has set his sights on Caroline. This is the first novel I’ve read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The main characters fully engaged me as a reader, and the supporting folks were great. This author tackled some deep emotional issues, and did a good job. I would definitely read more by her.

4.5 stars I really enjoyed Mixing Temptation, Josh and Caroline entertained me from start to end, loved these two. Josh and Caroline were both very likable, endearing and passionate characters. I loved watching their relationship slowly develop. Josh was patient, caring nurturing and very supportive of Caroline and everything she'd been through and still going through. It warmed my heart watching Caroline slowly find the strength to reclaim her life with Josh's help and support. Mixing Temptation was a beautifully written romance about two hurt souls who find friendship, comfort and unconditional love in each other's arms. The Second Shot series has been a wonderful read, while each book can be read as a standalone I recommend you read them all as the previous characters do factor in each book. Plus it helps the reader to form a connection thus creating a more fulfilling read.

Mixing Temptation is the latest full-length novel in Sara Jane Stone's Second Shot series and this is the one that I've been waiting for ever since main characters Josh Summers and Caroline Andrews were introduced in the first full-length story, Serving Trouble. Theirs has been a unique non-relationship--though I don't like calling it that since their friendship actually is a relationship--one that had Josh slowly but surely earning Caroline's trust (to a certain degree) and Caroline learning to let her guard down with him, one step at a time. She's been on the run from the moment she entered the series and he's been trying to win her over with his baked creations for nearly as long. Now, we get their much-anticipated love story, but then it's one that's been playing out since the beginning, albeit mostly in the periphery of everyone else's romance. The author's note about Caroline's story not even being part of her original plan had me so thankful that she decided Caroline and Josh deserved to have their love story told and what a story it was! It's been about fourteen months since Josh Summers encountered Caroline Andrews in the outskirts of Forever, Oregon. He's been wooing her with whatever he's whipped up in his family's farmhouse kitchen on a regular basis, not wanting to push too much or too far. When he asks her to be his date at the wedding of their close friends, she turns him down. Josh takes it in stride, but steps in when the chief of police, who just happens to be the bride's father, greets them. Josh can sense that Caroline is afraid of getting caught, so he pretends to be at the wedding with her as his date. He then decides to take his chances and asks her out so that they can give actual dating a try. She finally agrees, taking things at a slower pace but also taking more chances than before. But just when it looks like their non-relationship is on its way to an honest-to-goodness relationship, an old friend of Caroline and Josh's circle of friends in Forever requires help. Helping is the right thing to do, but it could cost Caroline her freedom and Josh the woman he loves. The evolution of Caroline is one of my favorite things about this series as a whole, and to see how far she's come from the distrusting, prickly woman she once was to who she is by the time this book ends was heartwarming and quite inspiring. She went from victim to survivor to a woman willing to move forward and live the life she deserves with the man she's fallen in love with and the friends she considers family. And what can I say about Josh? Goodness, someone should hand the man a medal for his patience and perseverance. But Caroline was a woman that was worth waiting for and when she and Josh finally got around to doing something about more than year of pent-up feelings and desires, it was a beautiful thing. It was interesting to note that while I was reading their story, Josh's siblings were around often, and I figured out that their stories were part of the author's Independence Falls series, so that bumps that up my to-be-read list. Mixing Temptation was a story about love, trust, and doing the right thing. Five stars. ♥

Josh and Caroline's story--finally! We met Caroline in Noah's book ( Serving Trouble ) and found out that she was on the run, AWOL from the Marines after turning her CO in for sexual assault. He got dishonorably discharged, charged with adultery--apparently, there was no proof that it hadn't been consensual. He blamed her for the mess his life had become, and she took off--ending up in Forever, Noah's hometown. Noah had been the one guy to believe her back then, had walked her to and from the latrine so she wouldn't be attacked, and had helped her to figure out how to report the assault without reporting it to her CO, as she was supposed to. (Because, duh.) Now she's hiding out in Forever, washing dishes in Noah's back room, panicking whenever someone in law enforcement walks by. Josh has been baking Caroline pies for the past year, trying to show her just how patient he can be. Life's given him a second chance after a near-fatal injury (which I'm guessing happened in Wild With You . though I haven't read that series yet--all of Josh's siblings find their HEAs in those books, so you'd better believe they're in my TBR now) and he's determined to not waste a second of it. So he's not afraid to be patient. There's so many new recipes he can try out in the meantime, and Caroline hasn't said no to pie in quite some time. ;) I loved how patient Josh was, and how even though he's the youngest brother and recently went through such a major event, he sticks by what he wants and doesn't let his brothers and sister deter him from his goals. He's fantastic with Caroline, and doesn't hesitate for a second when she says she's going to road trip to California to try and rescue a woman she met once and spent less than an hour with, even though Caroline had no real plan for how she was going to help other than letting Helene know she wasn't alone. (Helene and Ryan are getting their own book soon, yes? Fingers crossed!) I loved Caroline and Josh together. Whether they're eating pie, kissing in the back room of the bar, or road tripping to California (does that little cabin on the beach really exist? Because I so want to move in) they're just so good together. I like that there weren't any magic fixes for Caroline's problems and that the timeline felt very realistic. And don't even get me started on all that Josh does to make sure Caroline's going to be around for their HEA...OMG, this guy is amazing... Mixing Temptation is the third book in the series, and though you could probably start here, since there's so much of Caroline's story--not to mention a heck of a lot of pies shared between Josh and Caroline--in the first two books, it makes a lot more sense (for this book, at least) to have read the other two first. Rating: 4 stars / A- I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

really like this series and had high expectations for Josh and Caroline's story. Their story really starts in Serving Trouble and continues in Stirring Attraction, the first and second books of the series. I highly recommend that you read them prior to this. Josh and Caroline have become friends over the the last year and a half while sharing pies and brownies that Josh bakes her. He understands she doesn't trust easily and that he needs to take it slow with her, but it is getting harder to be just friends. Caroline wants to move forward with Josh, but being AWOL makes it hard for her to think of having a future. But after they share a kiss, Caroline thinks she's ready to start moving forward. Just when thing start looking up for them, Caroline decides that in order to truly move forward, she must deal with her past and turns herself in. I already loved Josh for being so patient with her, but the way he goes to battle for her to be set free made him one of my favorite book boyfriends. While I loved finally seeing them get together, I was a little disappointed at how short the book was. I loved the side story with Ryan and Helena, can't wait to see how that develops. I received an ARC via Edelweiss for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.

Once again, Ms Jones displays her talent by telling us a story not only engaging, but one that is thought provoking, thoughtful , heart wrenching, and touching , but at the same time filled with redemption and the power of trust and love. We are taken back to the town of Forever and the third book in the author's series titled A Second Chance Shot. This time we have Caroline and Josh. Caroline is a Marine on the run. While in combat she was raped by her superior. He got away with it , and fearing repercussions, she went AWOL. She still has not recovered from the trauma, but that doesn't keep Josh away. He befriends her and is determined to earn her trust and hopefully her love. The story makes you realize that as a society, we need to do more for the men and women who serve our country and put their lives on the line so we can enjoy freedom. That people in power need to be held accountable for their actions, and that the women in the military who are raped, should be helped and not ostracized . Do not hesitate to read the book. Another great one by this talented author. I received this book front Edelweiss, the publisher and Tasty Book Tours for an honest review.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you..... for writing Caroline's story. I was touched by her plight from the moment she entered the scene in the first book. She was so strong, yet broken. And Josh--he is the creamiest marshmallow, yummy guy. Patience should be his name. It is a wonder they both didn't weigh an extra person or so with all his baking. Yep, she suffered in the war, she didn't loose a limb, or suffer a bullet wound, but her pain was on-going with limited chance of healing . Because of her situation, she did something she would never have done--always wanting to become a marine--now she left without leave. Josh wasn't the only one wanting her, the law did as well. What will it take to get her life back? After a year, will Josh's patient, persistence break through? Will she be able to watch another woman suffer as she did and not do anything? Read the story of the brave woman and the man who helped her move on. See what true love will bring a man to do. Watch the woman the country should have been honoring, instead, they deserted her when she had to fight a much closer enemy. Every woman should read this book and make sure you support those women like Caroline. Thank you, Sara Jane Stone. I was provided an ARC for an honest review.
