Children's Literature - Colleen Kessler
Part of the "Why Chemistry Matters" series, this book takes a complex subject and breaks it down into manageable chunks of text and photographs. The topics covered include information about compounds, mixtures, solutions, and an overview of what an element is—all integral to the chemistry curricula taught in the middle school science classroom. The author did a nice job of giving a general description of elements and the periodic table without repeating information that is presented in another book in this series dedicated only to that topic. She provides examples of each topic that are easy for kids to identify with. Chalk is a nice, relatable example of something that is brittle, a physical property. There are also some easy activities like making a simple solution that kids can try on their own. On top of the great information found in this book, it features a user-friendly glossary, index, and web-finder. Kids can look up difficult words, find specific information quickly, and locate web sources where they can learn more about chemistry. Reviewer: Colleen Kessler
