Mmm...Let's Eat!

Overview

The colors that various little animal kids notice throughout the day inspire them to eat foods that match those colors. Morning's yellow sunshine leads to a breakfast banana. Red trucks and red balls at playtime inspire a craving for strawberries; an orange sunset lends itself to slices of slurpy mango and sweet potatoes. At each color stage of the day, matching food items (plus one or two silly choices) are pictured; then a flap is lifted to find out what the kid chose to eat. When it's time to sleep and lights ...

When it's time to sleep and lights are out, a cool clear glass of water is just the right nightcap. Following this is a brief endnote written by a nutritionist with advice on encouraging kids to eat fresh foods and a balanced diet.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Praise for Betsy Thompson's illustrations in Eggs 1, 2, 3, by Janet Halfmann:

*An Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Medal Winner

"For her picture-book debut, Thompson plays up the nature theme by using richly textured papers and fabrics to fashion her cut-paper collages. While her shapes and outlines are quite simple, their textures are anything but plain, adding another whole dimension to the artwork." —Kirkus Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-K—This brief offering links appetizing, healthy foods with their bright hues. Readers are presented with a rainbow of colorful edibles and then asked which item each animal would like to eat, starting with early in the morning until bedtime at night. For example, "Bright yellow sunshine wakes Raccoon up. He wants to eat something YELLOW." Raccoon can choose from a banana, a boot, a pineapple, a flower, or an apple. A lift of a flap reveals that he chose a banana. A spread is devoted to each color. Yellow, green, white, red, orange, or blue-purple categorize the choices for a raccoon, monkey, puppy, lion, panda, tiger, and bunny. The large, cheerful images have a collagelike appearance. This title should pair nicely with other color-concept books.—Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX
