Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patrice Russo Belotte
If it had been up to Willems' himself, his fate as an illustrator would have been determined at a very young age and with a very simple letter. Writing to famous comic strip illustrator, Willems simply asked for his job when the illustrator had passed. Fortunately, the letter was unanswered and Willems found success on his own. Part of "The Children's Illustrators" series, this book captures the life and work of Willems. Written in simple language for young readers, each page is filled with information about what inspires Willems and how he creates his unique illustrations. Driven by a keen sense of humor, Willems pursued comedy and acting throughout high school. He continued his admiration of comics and even created a comic strip as part of a weekly real estate publication. During college in New York City, he changed his focus from comedy and filmmaking to animation. Before life as a successful illustrator took form, Willems earned six Emmy Awards working for nine seasons on Sesame Street. His further work in children's television taught him the art of simplicity that inspires his storytelling and illustrations. Divided into short sections, with lots of personal pictures of Willems and his illustrations, this series is a great introduction to nonfiction reading. The life and passion of each illustrator is made complete with anecdotes, fun facts, and tips on the illustrating process. Each book is complete with a glossary of new terms for young readers and websites for further information. Reviewer: Patrice Russo Belotte
