Mob Hits: The Ultimate Casino Sound Track

EMI's 20-song collection Mob Hits: The Ultimate Casino Sound Track rounds up swinging songs from the golden age of lounge singing, the late '50s and early '60s. The usual suspects from this kind of compilation are all here (minus the two undisputed heavyweight champs Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin unfortunately): Bobby Darin, Louis Prima, Wayne Newton, Mel Tormé, Julie London, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett. The compilers throw a few curveballs with tracks by serious jazz artists like Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, and Nat King Cole as well as tracks by British teen pop singer Helen Shapiro (who turns in a marvelously cheesy version of "Beyond the Sea") and tragic British pop singer Alma Cogan (who gives ...

The compilers throw a few curveballs with tracks by serious jazz artists like Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, and Nat King Cole as well as tracks by British teen pop singer Helen Shapiro (who turns in a marvelously cheesy version of "Beyond the Sea") and tragic British pop singer Alma Cogan (who gives Rosemary Clooney a run for her money with a knock-out version of "Mambo Italiano"). The two things that make this collection more interesting than most of this ilk are the wide range of performers and the lack of the same tired songs that always seem to be included. The Louis Prima song is a live medley of "Angelina/Zoom Zoom" instead of "Just a Gigolo," the Bobby Darin song is a wild live take of "Mack the Knife" instead of the studio version, Wayne Newton doesn't torture us with his rendition of "Danke Schoen," instead he tortures us with "Strangers in the Night." Julie London's "Cry Me a River" is stored away in favor of her impossibly sultry take on "Blues in the Night, " Shirley Bassey yells her way through "Big Spender" instead of "Goldfinger." You get the picture. What we have here is a collection of first-rate singers doing songs that most listeners are not sick to death of. Not to mention a weirdly swinging version of the "Love Theme from the Godfather" by Franck Pourcel & His Orchestra. For fans of swinging vocals, this is an offer that is hard to refuse. ~ Tim Sendra, Esquire
