Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Fans will be happy to hear that Mockingjay is every bit as complex and imaginative as Hunger Games and Catching Fire." --Entertainment Weekly

“At its best the trilogy channels the political passion of 1984, the memorable violence of A Clockwork Orange, the imaginative ambience of The Chronicles of Narnia and the detailed inventiveness of Harry Potter." --The New York Times Book Review

“Unfolding in Collins' engaging, intelligent prose and assembled into chapters that end with didn't-see-that-coming cliffhangers, this finale is every bit the pressure cooker of its forebears. [Mockingjay] is nearly as shocking, and certainly every bit as original and thought provoking, as The Hunger Games. Wow." --The Los Angeles Times

“Suspenseful... Collins' fans, grown-ups included, will race to the end." --USA Today

* “This concluding volume in Collins's Hunger Games trilogy accomplishes a rare feat, the last installment being the best yet, a beautifully orchestrated and intelligent novel that succeeds on every level." --Publishers Weekly, starred review

    ABANDONED Chapter 1

    The lightning struck, then came the thunder. It was freezing inside my uninsulated room, which had five rectangle-shaped holes, made as makeshift windows, but we didn't have enough money to get actual windows. Dad and mom slept on the floor, underneath our warmest blankets, their heads on top of our softest pillows. Our warmest blankets are as stiff as metal, and as uncomfortable as sandpaper, and if it dragged, it sounded like nails on a chalkboard. The softest pillows are as heavy as ten elephants, as unforgiving as a brick, and as soft as cement. As in, dried cement. There was another stroke of lightning, another clap of thunder, and the lumps underneath those blankets disappeared. I pulled Stripes, my stuffed tiger, closer, pulled out my flashlight, investigating the lifeless area of my bedroom. Even Leah and Logan, my brother and his wife, were gone. I checked the bassinet. Even baby Lavinia was gone. I ran outside, expecting to hear the normal sounds of nighttime in the Quad Cities, but there was only a low grumble arising. Eight shadows moved in my direction. It was my friends. Eliana, Tami, Briana, Carrie, Tori, and Nora. We were left alone. {Part Two at Catching Fire Movie Tie-In Edition}
