He considers the social and philosophical contexts of these art forms and demonstrates that they offer a Romantic critique of the disenchantment of the modern world, the alienation of nature, and the subordination of individuals to an emerging "collective mechanical life." Tekiner also argues that several of these art forms provide a prescription for ameliorating the conditions of modern life by evoking a heightened sense of spiritual reality and a greater connection with nature.
