Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD(Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)
Description: This is the fifth edition of a comprehensive book detailing the current practice of blood banking and transfusion medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive book on blood banking, and to integrate the technical aspects into the practice of transfusion medicine. This is quite a noble goal, and these world renowned authors (and editor) have succeeded admirably.
Audience: This book would appeal to anyone interested in blood banking — clinical laboratory scientists (students or practicing), laboratory medicine or pathology residents, practicing pathologists or clinical hematologists, or any physician interested in this area of medicine.
Features: This 500+ page hardcover book contains 27 chapters that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about blood banking and transfusion medicine. It begins with six color plates, of which Plate 2 - standardized grading of macroscopic red cell antigen-antibody reactions - is extraordinarily useful. These are actual photomicrographs of immediate spin reactions and at a glance, will automatically assure standardized reporting of the reactions. The layout of this book is reminiscent of Dr. Harmening's other endeavors — each chapter begins with outlining the desired learning goals and objectives, the text is clear and concise with informative figures as needed, and the chapter ends with a final summary of key learning points and a review quiz to test the reader's knowledge. Dr. Sazama's chapter on medicolegal and ethical aspects of providing blood collection and transfusion service is simply fascinating riveting reading. An added bonus is the table of blood group characteristics (antigen, ISBT number, frequency in different ethnicities, expression during life, etc.) on the inside covers at the front and back of the book. Nothing like having a quick complete reference when you need it!
Assessment: This is a great book. Get it if you have any interest in this area.
