Modern Bridge Conventions by Root & Pavlicek is an indespensable book for serious bridge players. Though the book mainly follow modern Stanadrd American version of 2/1 game force system, it is good for players of all systems. The defensive bidding description is excellent, and since the defensive techniques are the same whatever system you follow, the book would be valuable to players of all systems.

There are always some new-fangled bridge conventions being dreamed up but all the ones you need ever care about are in this great book. And the discussion of each one is so comprehensive (Stayman gets several pages!). These are great writers with easy to understand discussions of each convention and the examples they give are very helpful. You can't go wrong with this terrific book. I'm buying a copy for my sister as a gift -- not as a hint.
