Overview

The late 1980s, revolutionary advances in digital halftoning enabled inkjet printers to achieve much higher image fidelity. The rapid rate of progress has resulted in numerous breakthroughs scattered throughout the literature, rendering old technologies obsolete and renewing the need for a centralized source on the current state of the art. Entirely revised and updated, Modern Digital Halftoning, Second Edition provides an integrated and up-to-date treatment of stochastic halftoning and digital printing.

Using full-color illustrations to enhance the text, this edition incorporates new topics as well as updated models, algorithms, and methods used to construct and improve the quality of green-noise, blue-noise, and multitone images. Following a review of various halftoning techniques, this edition now covers amplitude modulated dither arrays, adapting to human visual models, direct binary search, and handling stochastic moire problems. It also presents a new chapter on lenticular printing, a means for printing color holographic images. An accompanying CD-ROM contains MATLAB software files and illustrated examples employing algorithms, statistics, and other key concepts from the book.

Features: Provides a comprehensive treatment of various approaches and analysis tools used for monochrome and color digital halftoning, Offers unique coverage of cutting-edge topics, including stochastic moire, lenticular printing, and multitoning optimization, Presents new chapters on dither array construction, human visual models, direct binary search, stochastic moire, lenticular printing, and digital multitoning, Compares the visual quality of various halftoning techniques in terms of spatialand spectral characteristics, Includes a CD-ROM with MATLAB files implementing numerous halftoning and statistical characterization algorithms described in the book.

Documenting the development of digital printing since the first edition, Modern Digital Halftoning, Second Edition offers a well-rounded and accurate perspective on the technological capabilities of digital printing and provides all the necessary tools for continuing research in the field.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
This book/CD-ROM package offers a broad review of digital halftoning. It develops new standards for halftone robustness as well as visibility, and examines a new stochastic halftoning model, green- noise, and its desirable attributes in printing. Introduces several metrics for the study of binary patterns, presenting both the ideal spatial and ideal spectral characteristics of green-noise. Examines techniques for producing green-noise and studies them in terms of their visual pleasantness and the computational complexity. Also looks at the application of green-noise to color halftoning environments. Includes color and b&w photos. The CD-ROM contains algorithms and statistics with color examples, and a guide to running software on MATLAB for converting digital images to halftones. Lau is a DSP engineer and a member of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology. Arce is professor and chair for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Delaware. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
