Overview

Far more than a list of do's and don'ts. this unique and highly readable book is an intriguing guide to proper use of the English language. The famous science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke said 'This book radiates common sense- a commodity, alas, which becomes less and less common everyday.'It is an essential handbook for communicating effectively and directly.

Author Biography: The English language is beautiful...let's do it justice!' This life-long belief impelled Barney Oliver, a child-genius, born in Soquel, California, to write this book. Barney was an engineer and a scientist by training, with degrees from Stanford University and CalTech. He was head of research for Hewlett-Packard, and his achievements were legend, as was his contribution to SETI Institute. Barney died in 1995. This book is one of his great legacies.

Editorial Reviews

John Billingham
Coming from England, I used to think that my own command of the English language was somewhat superior After being exposed to Barney for a year or two, I revised that opinion In fact, he corrected my grammar and syntax just as he did with everyone else But now, after twenty-five years of learning from the master, I feel superior again With Modern English Misusage in hand, I can correct everyone`s English under Barney`s authority.
Arthur C. Clarke
Barney Oliver`s book radiates common sense on every page-a commodity which, alas, becomes less and less common every day I wish it could become a textbook in every school It could replace a lot of teachers who should be replaced, and give valuable assistance to those who shouldn`t.
Gordon E. Moore
Precise ideas require precise language to express them Too many of today`s scientists and engineers missed Barney`s early exposure to correct grammar and the proper usage of English words This think volume can go far toward correcting that shortcoming in a manner much more fun than the English textbook I used in high school.
