Overview

It’s time for a current, definitive JavaScript book, and in this comprehensive beginner’s guide, bestselling author Larry Ullman teaches the language as it is implemented today. Larry demonstrates how to build upon JavaScript’s ease of use, while demystifying its often-cryptic syntax, especially for those who have not programmed before. This book enforces modern JavaScript’s best practices and embraces key Web development approaches such as progressive enhancement and unobtrusive scripting. The author demonstrates loads of real-world code and makes it available for download.

You’ll learn about JavaScript itself and the relationship between JavaScript and HTML. Next you’ll explore variables, common operators, and control structures. Then you’ll create functions, handle events, and do more with HTML forms. You’ll master Ajax, work with frameworks, and use JavaScript with PHP to create a complete example. I've been reading through several JavaScript books in my quest to learn the language. This book has been an excellent addition to my bookshelf. It gives solid background information within the current JS environment (i.e. acknowledging current frameworks)

I bought this book entirely based on Larry Ullman's two other books on PHP which are the best I've read on the subject. This book is good, but didn't seem to have nearly as usable examples compared to the two PHP books. But the writing is still good and clear. The first half I already knew from either reading quick tutorials online, or just the crossover from PHP (arrays, variables, loops, ect.) I ended up buying a book on jQuery that emphasizes the importance of Javascript (Beginning jQuery by Jack Franklin). Has far more practical uses and still moves quick enough for someone who knows some programming. But like I said, this is still a decent enough book. I'd say if you are starting to learn Javascript from scratch this would be a good place to start.
