More About This Textbook

The William Leavitt guitar method, used as the basic text for the Berklee College of Music guitar program, has stood the test of time and earned a vast and loyal following of dedicated guitar students and instructors. By popular demand, Berklee Press has created a compilation of the original volumes 1, 2, and 3. Now, serious guitar students and instructors, from beginning through advanced, have the convenience of progressing through all three volumes of this classic guitar method in one comprehensive book. Innovative solos, duets, and exercises progressively teach melody, harmony, and rhythm.

Volume 1
A beginning-level book presenting a comprehensive range of guitar and music fundamentals, including:
  • scales
  • melodic studies
  • chord and arpeggio studies
  • special exercises for both hands
  • accompaniment techniques
  • a unique approach to voice leading using moveable chord forms
Volume 2
An intermediate level book that continues and builds upon the study of melody, scales, arpeggios, and chords, covering the entire fingerboard. This volume also addresses:
  • intervals
  • chord voicings
  • improvisation
  • rhythm-guitar techniques
  • play-along duets
Volume 3

    A MUST BUY!!

As famous Jazz guitarist, Mike Stern, said ¿¿[Modern Method for Guitar Book is] the best method ever written for guitar.¿ When someone that well-known, that well-respected, comments on a book by the Berklee Press, you have just got to believe it. The ¿Modern Method for Guitar Book¿ now includes a DVD-ROM, so players can understand it better. Even without the DVD-ROM, this book is still very clear with its explanations on various things such as scales, melodic studies, chord and arpeggio studies, how to read music, special exercises for developing technique in both hands, and chord voicing. I have been using this book for a year, and constantly reviewing the pages I have already finished. I have noticed that I am a lot better at reading music than I used to be, and even my hearing is a lot better as I have focused on chord voicing. I would recommend a private instructor to help you throughout this book If you don¿t know where to start, START WITH THIS ONE! I guarantee this book is worth going through! And if you¿re really driven, go for Volume 2 and Volume 3! Hey, if you¿re not driven, just do it. It will be WORTHWHILE.

    Great Series!

I actually own all 3 of the Modern Method for Guitar books and i just wanted to say that they superb tools for really getting an in depth look into guitar playing and music in general. If you dont know how to read music the first volume covers that step and also makes more comfortable with the chord voicings and hand techniques. The second title really expands across the whole fingerboard with voicings which really helped me out on my improv and fretboard knowledge. The 3rd book really tops its all off, connecting all your knowledge with discussio and excersize that focus on the relationship between all the scales and chords. This book not only made me a talented guitar player but now i know so much more about music! If you are willing to put in the time with these books you will certainly achieve results in your playing. No doubt about it!
