Modern Surgical Care is an important medical literary achievement, well worth the money and sure to be the flagship of surgical physiology for years to come.

This second edition is a fairly complete updating of the encyclopedic text first published in 1988. It is devoted to integrated system physiology and a description of specific organs. It intends "to bridge the gap between basic science physiology and physiologic derangements responsible for surgical diseases." The book is intended for general surgeons and will be most useful for general surgery residents in training. The format assumes familiarity with surgical practice, and therefore is not suitable for medical students. It does provide a valuable review of basic science principles for the practicing surgeon. In the organ specific chapters, the text focuses on pathophysiology, but most of the illustrations and diagrams describe elementary anatomy and diagrams of surgical operations with the ultimate result that coverage of both topics is sometimes superficial. Many of the illustrations are reproductions from old textbooks which sometimes give the book a patchwork character. Nonetheless, the descriptions of basic physiology and pathophysiology are excellent with minimal duplication across chapters. The discussions of coagulation, GI physiology, and renal physiology are outstanding. The new title is misleading. A resident would have difficulty managing mechanical ventilation, a major liver injury, or obstructing colon cancer based on this book alone. As an exposition of "the physiologic basis of surgical disease," however, it is an excellent addition to any surgical resident's library.
