Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This catalog of a 2006 exhibition at London's Royal Academy is a biography-driven look at portraits by Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1885-1920). Five English and American authors provide succinct and accessible essays on aspects of Modigliani's art, adding depth to his portraits by elucidating his relations with his sitters, considering his nudes in relation to the earlier tradition, and exploring the influence of England on the work of the Paris-based artist. A chronology and brief biographies of the sitters round out the work. Overall, this is a highly focused and successful catalog on an artist who has a voluminous and not always useful bibliography. Modigliani's biography has frequently colored public perception of his art, to the detriment of the art itself; this book uses biography to approach and understand his art. Highly recommended for all audiences. Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Libs. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
