Editorial Reviews

Creative Knitting
Designer Iris Schreier has "unvented" a new, improved knitting technique for making modular knits. With the more familiar technique, individual shapes - mostly squares, triangles or diamonds - were knit and bound off, then new stitches picked up from the edges of the first module. Each module was built on the previous ones, but the technique required cutting the yarn and starting anew with each new shape. With this new technique of short-row shaping and clever increasing and decreasing, all the stitches remain live, eliminating the cutting of yarn and the picking up of stitches. The author offers instructions for practicing a number of shapes, knit continuously, with projects to accompany each shape. The beautifully photographed projects themselveswraps, scarves, bags and moreuse yarns and colors that play up the shaping inherent in the technique. Indeed, this is a perfect method to take advantage of variegated yarns, as it breaks up the color pooling that sometimes occurs with hand-painted yarns.Modular Knits is a cross between a pattern book and a reference book. If you are a fan of modular knitting, you'll be excited by the opportunities afforded by this new technique. If you aren't yet a fan, try it; you may become hooked!

Vogue Knitting
It's not often that a pattern book truly breaks new ground, but that's what Schreier's collection does for the age-old technique of modular knitting. Instead of creating a modular effect using the traditional method -- binding off individual pieces, cutting the yarn, and picking up stitches to knit new modules into existing ones -- Schreier simplifies the process, demonstrating how to knit squares, triangles and diamonds without a snip of the scissors. Each shape still looks like a separate section, but the stitches remain live on the needles at all times, thus connecting the shapes. The result: stunning scarves, shawls, hats, purses, pillows and afghans that look far more difficult than they actually are. That's what we call innovative.

Library Journal
Modular knitting normally involves creating individual motifs such as squares, triangles, and diamonds and then either joining them to create the finished piece or binding off one motif, cutting the yarn, joining a new yarn, picking up stitches on that piece, and starting another motif from there. Designer Schreier has come up with a variation using short-row techniques to create modules all in one piece. Each is illustrated with practice swatches and is followed by 24 projects that include scarves, shawls, hats, a poncho, and even a sweater, which-had it been done the traditional way-would have required 300 separate squares! For all knitting collections. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
