Overview

This comprehensive collection of skills instruction, comprised of fifty-three self-contained modules, is now presented in a full-color, single volume. Modules increase in complexity as students progress through the book.

Flexible enough to meet the needs of any program, the book also has a self-instructional approach that is popular with faculty and students alike. With the demands on nursing faculties of increased student numbers and limited or no increase in faculty time available in the skills lab, the self-instructional approach is pertinent in today's market.

The flexible, modular format lets you learn at your own pace, and lets you focus on the specific skills needed to care for your patient. Expanded critical thinking exercises in every module provide more opportunities to test your knowledge and hone your problem solving skills. The full-color design and new art program presents essentials skills in an easy-to-understand format.

A bonus CD-ROM includes a variety of performance checklists and head-to-toe assessment videos.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Ola Houston Fox
Volume I of this sixth edition contains the more basic nursing skills progressing from simple to complex. The purpose is to provide a self-instructional resource for students to learn basic skills and procedures. Although targeted for RN and LPN students, volume I is also appropriate for some courses enrolling nursing assistants. The flexible, self-contained modular format is ideal for self-paced instruction. Pages are three-hole punched and perforated so they can be handed in to the instructor for feedback and kept in a notebook. The title accurately reflects book's content. This basic nursing skills and procedures text is an excellent tool for learning basic skills. The overall design is easy to follow. Rationales and critical thinking exercises are in each module. Long-term and home care are emphasized. The book is appropriate for individual or nursing education library purchase.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Mary Allen Carey, PhD (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description: This book on basic skills and procedures for beginning nursing students includes a CD-ROM.
Purpose: A nursing-process-oriented, self-instructional approach is employed to help nursing students learn basic skills and procedures, an approach that has proven beneficial in previous editions.
Audience: The audience is beginning level practitioners.
Features: The modules are organized into nine units that reflect broad concepts of nursing care. The first two units focus on concepts and skills that students must master in order to provide basic care. The modules in Unit 3 move through assessment skills on to more complex skills. Subsequent units address managing special elimination and nutrition needs; supporting oxygenation and circulation; performing special therapeutic and supportive procedures; administering medication and intravenous therapy. The visual appeal is apparent with full-color photos and illustrations.
Assessment: This is a high quality textbook of significant usefulness. The improvements from earlier editions are significant.
