a reader who enjoys historical novels

The story kept me interested throughout the novel. I had a difficult time putting it aside. When I came to the end of the novel, I was sad because I wanted to read more of what eventually happened with David and Michal's relationship. I would read other books by this author. Also, I would recommend this novel for book club discussions. I think it would be interesting to hear other's feedback about the characters and the story line. It would make for a great discussion.

    Recommended Highly!

A fictionalized account of the first English traders to make it into Northern India. The timeline is compressed and it has just one main character, but it is still a great story full of intrique.

Excellent story, consistently interesting from start to finish

I am not really familiar with this story from its historical perspective, but I found it thoroughly entertaining from the beginning to the end. For a story of such wide scope, and detail, Hoover nevertheless never lets it get too bogged down. If you enjoy adventure, with charachters that have depth and development, along with action, travel, and a little romance, this is a fine "historical" novel.

    Excellent read

I would never read a book this long, too heavy at 1440 pages, but on Nook it is perfect. It is a wonderful journey through India with descriptions of customs, religious beliefs, warfare using elephants, and politics, all very cleverly woven into a colorful tapestry. The story itself is full of characters that are believable and events that are taken from historical events of the time. It spotlights towns and cities we hear in the news today that were in existence in 1300's. A thoroughly enjoyable novel.

    Too wordy

I liked the story, but the author became too bogged down in unnecessqry details and romantic verbiage. I finally gave up and stopped reading after page 1000. I like adventure and swashbuckling stories, but I don't need every detail of every action and thought by the characters.

    Wow

1450+ pages of deeply intense history of one of the most interesting periods in history. A lot of foreign words of several languages made this particularly hard to follow the story line. I didn't discover the glossary until I finished the book. So much was happening, then suddenly it just ended, leaving me to wonder what happened to all of the central characters. Really rotten ending, but the story itself was interesting. Learned a lot, so I guess it was worth it.

    historically interesting

Enjoy Mr. Hoover's writings, but...way too many story lines that didn't converge until very late in the book. I suppose if I had been aware of the the historical basis for the story, it would have made more sense. Constant font changes made for a slow read - big, little, bigger, littler...Why isn't a final check done before a book is published?

    Excellent book

I am stingy with my stars. But for this book, wish i could give more! Excellent writing with action, intrigue, passion, love, and betrayal. NOT my normal genre which made the high rating all the more worthy. Kudos!

Love Historical Fiction? You'll Love This!

This was my first experience with Indian history, and I found myself going to Wikipedia a lot to find out more about this period of time in Indian history.

The author's descriptions were right on the money. What I had pictured in my mind was exactly what I saw when I looked up the real historical reference. I was glad not to be reading in the summer, I was feeling warm enough from the authors description of the weather.

The plot of the story had lots of twists and turns, but was well written enough to not get lost in the large cast of characters.

Very good book, I highly recommend it.
