Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
This book compares wet animals with dry ones. Green turtles live in the ocean while desert tortoises live in the dry desert; fishing cats get wet when they hunt, sand cats prefer a dry meal; loons swim, roadrunners run—this book is full of animal opposites. The book not only points out obvious differences between animals but supplements them with interesting facts. The kangaroo rat takes a dry bath, using sand instead of water; camels can drink a bathtub full of water in ten minutes. Captivating photos do a thorough job of reinforcing the concept of opposites. Readers see the animals in their habitat, whether it is wet or dry and learn an interesting fact about the animals' survival, like desert animals get water from their food because water is scarce in the desert. An enjoyable way to learn opposites, this book will surely hold the reader's attention long enough for them to learn the concept. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz

PreS-Gr 2–These bilingual titles are highly effective due to the combination of full-color photographs and simple sentences that help listeners and beginning readers understand the texts and concepts introduced through animal opposites. The photographs contribute to the books’ appeal. Fascinating Did You Know?/Sabías que? sections provide fun facts about key animal traits to entice readers into further learning. Librarians, teachers, or caregivers can attract reluctant, early, or emergent readers with these offerings.–Eric Gómez, Broward County African-American Research Library, Fort Lauderdale, FL
