School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-- The story of a developing friendship between a good-hearted but bumbling, nearsighted mole and a tidy, self-sufficient shrew. Mole accidently burrows his way into Shrew's bathroom cabinet after a horde of relatives crowd him out of his home. When he next shows up in Shrew's fireplace, she decides to help him find a new home before he destroys hers. They look at a number of available spots, but Mole finds none as suitable as Shrew's house. Late in the day, he discovers an empty chipmunk den next door to Shrew and moves in. Shrew's doubts about having Mole as a close neighbor grow as he comes to borrow various articles and stays for breakfast and lunch. She begins to change her mind when he returns the bucket filled with flowers and the hedge trimmers sharpened and invites her to join him for dinner at his house. Ormai's whimsical watercolors are rich in detail, bringing the animals to life in their cozy, country setting. This is a delightful read-aloud for younger Wind in the Willows fans, and the conversations beteen Shrew and Mole lend themselves to oral interpretation. --Eunice Weech, M. L.
