Editorial Reviews

Ann Traynor
This is the second edition of a compilation of the major molecular biologic advances in the broad field of hematology. This enlarged edition reflects tremendous advances in the knowledge of gene structure and function and disease mechanisms that form the basis of a molecular approach to hematology. The purpose is to assemble under one cover the current knowledge of gene structure and function and disease mechanisms forming the basis of a molecular approach to hematology. The aspects of hematology covered are all of those for which insight into molecular aspects of disease processes exist, including chapters devoted to hemoglobin switching, white cell motility, and molecular aspects of oncogenesis, each contributed by a leading investigator in the field. The scope is tremendous, and the authors have the perspective needed to accomplish this purpose successfully. According to the authors, the book is written for the serious student of hematology as a supplement to standard textbooks, for teaching and practicing physicians, for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and for the established scientist. In fact, it will have its greatest use among those with an interest in and some working knowledge of molecular biology. The first three chapters, addressing the basis of molecular regulation and investigation, are excellently written, however, and do place it within reach of the student naive to molecular biology. The black-and-white illustrations summarize clearly and concisely molecular techniques, protein structure and function, updated enzymatic pathways and gene structures. The references are complete and up-to-date, and update sections at the end of some chapters reflect inclusion ofpublications appearing just before printing. The table of contents is clear and user-friendly and amenable to rapid referral. This book represents a thoughtful compilation of the significant advances in the molecular biology of hematologic disease. It encompasses diverse aspects of hematology with accuracy of detail. It is a highly useful reference in the field of molecular hematology.

New edition of a text that covers the newest findings on the molecular bases of blood cell functions and disease mechanisms, as well as the impact of these discoveries on the state of medicine. Stamatoyannopoulos (U. of Washington School of Medicine), Philip W. Majerus (Washington U. School of Medicine), Roger M. Perlmutter (Merck Research Laboratories) and Harold Varmus (Cornell Medical School) present 29 chapters by leading specialists on topics including hematopoiesis, red cells, lymphopoiesis, myelopoiesis/white blood cells, hemostasis, molecular oncology, viruses, and gene therapy. Contains many b&w charts and illustrations and a few color images. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Gerald A Soff, M.D.(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is an in-depth basic science text on the molecular biology and biochemistry of blood and blood diseases.
Purpose: The authors provide a current, in-depth presentation of the basic science of blood diseases. Considering how central hematology is to a wide range of clinical and basic science subjects in medicine, this text is a particularly important contribution. The authors do an extremely good job in covering the diverse subjects.
Audience: This book is appropriate for both basic scientists and clinicians who are intimately involved with the basic sciences of hematology and blood. It would also be appropriate for students (and others) who are studying a specific aspect of the basic sciences of blood. The authors are all respected authorities in their fields.
Features: The book covers a wide range of cellular hematology as well as blood coagulation factors, and the immune system. It also includes an appropriate amount of clinical tie-ins. The book is very well illustrated and the figures definitely add to the value and clarity of the teaching.
Assessment: This is an excellent basic science text on the molecular biology and biochemistry of blood and blood diseases. This will serve as a valuable reference for anyone studying the physiology and pathophysiology of blood and blood disease. A valuable addition to any medical or biology library.
