It covers major advances in signal transduction, intracellular protein sorting, gene regulation, control of cell division, and developmental biology. The biology of plants and the nervous system are integrated throughout the main text. The Third Edition also extensively updates coverage of immunology and cancer, and adds two new chapters that examine recombinant DNA technique and proteins as machines.

Part I covers elementary principles, basic biochemistry, and the principles of the main experimental methods for investigating cells. Parts II and III represent the central core of cell biology and are concerned mainly with those properties that are common to most eucaryotic cells. Part II deals with the expression and transmission of genetic information, while Part III discusses the internal organization of cells. Part IV follows the behavior of cells in multicellular organisms, starting with cell-cell jucntions and extra-cellular matrix and ending with the disruption of multicellular organizations that occurs in cancer.
