Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Morris the Mole, delighted at the arrival of spring, goes in search of someone to love. Although hampered by poor eyesight, Morris is sure he knows just what he is seeking. But the "Luscious Shiny Black Fur" he finds to love, unfortunately, is a horse that blows him away. "The Pretty Pink Nose" belongs to a pig that rolls him in the mud. The "Gorgeous Big Wide Feet" of a duck also send him tumbling. Depressed, Morris sits on his molehill. Fortunately he is then given a pair of glasses. Through them he can see that he has found his love at last, or she has found him. The tale unfolds in a simple theme and variations format as our appealing mole hero first finds one of his sought-for characteristics, and then gets pushed away only to find another candidate. The scenes represent the farmyard life appealingly; the several animals are created naturalistically. Morris is, however, quite anthropomorphic in both appearance and actions. Beardshaw uses opaque paints loosely to create the lighthearted adventure. The cutouts in the cover of the paper edition add appeal, as do the end pages of the hardback. PreS-Gr 2

It is springtime, and Morris sets out to find love. Even though he does not see very well, he knows exactly what to look for-black shiny fur, a pink nose, and big wide feet. Following the folklore motif of "threes," he finds a different animal for each quality, only to discover that each one is not right. Luscious Shiny Black Fur (a horse) throws him, Pretty Pink Nose (a pig) is too wet, and Gorgeous Big Wide Feet (a duck) makes him sneeze. Sad, he returns to his molehill, and love discovers him. In carefully chosen words, the text creates visual images that allow readers to place themselves in the setting and to feel the mood. The bright, colorful, realistic illustrations reflect the action and depict a traditional farm setting. While the ending seems obvious, children will relate to Morris as he searches for someone to love and will cheer for him as he keeps trying in spite of each mishap.-Margaret R. Tassia, Millersville University, PA

Kirkus Reviews
Spring brings Morris the mole out of his burrow and looking for love. Being weak in the eyesight department, however, his quest seems doomed to failure; the shiny black fur that swims into view belongs to a horse who blows him into a pile of leaves, the pretty pink nose to a pig who knocks him into slimy mud and the wide feet to a goose who almost sits on him. Discouraged, Morris retreats-only to achieve bliss at last when Mini, another mole, arrives with a pair of eyeglasses that literally clarifies his whole outlook. Between the hearts on the cover and a final view of the happy couple cavorting joyously, Beardshaw fills her soft-edged scenes with spring flowers, smiling animals and paired-off birds and insects. Ah, sweet romance. (Picture book. 5-7)

    One of our favorites!

My 20-month old loves this book - it's just short enough to keep her attention, with lots of adorable pictures for her to point at and identify. It's also a very sweet story. And the paperback price can't be beat. Highly recommend!

    Kindergarten class love the mole...

Great story to read to young kids. Story line lead to discussion, and art work was well enjoyed.
Have had students request that I read it again and again.

    I Also Recommend:

It is a cute story and well illustrated.

Buy only books for kids you would love to read over and over. That is one of my favorites. It is a cute story, and I love the pictures. In addition you can take that book everywhere, because it is not heavy.
