Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Not every eleven-year-old girl can boast the skills of hypnotizing, time stopping, time traveling, mind reading, and morphing. But Miss Molly Moon is not every girl. With such an impressive resume, it seems only likely that wherever Molly goes adventure and dangers are not far behind. In this latest addition to the "Molly Moon" series, Molly becomes consumed with her newly acquired possession, the large gold coin that had once belonged to the horrible Miss Hunroe. Is there any connection between the raised musical note engraved on the coin and Molly's newly acquired music skills that are so powerful she hypnotizes those who hear her music? Molly's faithful pug dog Petula is certain that the coin is evil and that Molly has fallen under its power. Will Petula, Gerry, and Rocky be able to save Molly or will Molly need to save herself and her friends from their own troubles? Perhaps they will all require some outside help from a very special someone. Molly Moon is a dynamic character that will draw young readers with her unique gifts and outlook at life. The plot is just as dynamic with enough action, drama, magic, and suspense to keep any elementary child enchanted. The setting of Japan is beautifully portrayed and its culture conveyed through its cuisine, origami, dialect, architecture, and religion. Molly's heritage is evident from her proper English tongue. The overarching theme of this chapter book is the destructive power of greed and the saving love of family and friends. On a note of caution, there are three occurrences of mild profanity in this book that may not be fitting for some young readers. Overall, this novel is beautifully and sensitively written, one that only continues to add to the charm of this series. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson

Meet the Author

Georgia Byng grew up outside Winchester, in England, near the river Itchen, with three naughty brothers and a sister. Her dad was nature loving and her mum was very encouraging and warm. The nearby country lane with its many cottages was somewhere Georgia first found out about characters, for it was teeming with them, and she used to interview them. Otherwise she would try to sell these neighbours things she had made.

As a child she loved acting and so at 18 went to The Central School of Speech and Drama in London. After college she began to paint and write. She had always written poems and songs but now she started writing stories.

Her first were in comic strip, a medium that she worked with for five years. The Sock Monsters was her first published book in 1995 - a comic strip story for 5 - 7 year olds.

Georgia lives in a house in London full of old and new art, as her husband is the conceptual artist Marc Quinn. Marc keeps all sorts of strange things in the fridge - once he had to keep a Canadian frog in there as it was hibernating and had to be kept cold. They and their family, Tiger, Lucas and Sky love to travel, their favorite destination being India.

I've always loved molly moon, and this was... not bad. You know how you had to sort of ignore the coincidences and unlikely hypnotic powers to enjoy every book from 2 on? Yeah, well, you're going to have to do that here bigtime. SPOILER ALERT! READ ON AT YOUR OWN RISK! HUGE ENDING SPOILER! Also, this is just a personal preference, but I hate those books where the kids lose their powers at the end, and they're so relieved because now they can live a normal life. It's too soppy, and frankly I'd rather keep some useful powers if I were them. This is the same as the children of the lamp series ending. It's just... annoying.

I once thought I could be something. Right now though that seems like a far away goal. My life has no purpose. The highlight of my day is probably taking a nap. I don't want to wait for something to find me. I want to find it. I want to be able to create something amazing that no person has thought of. That's kind of hard to do when you are growing up around drug attics and drunks. I swear to myself I won't be a drunk only remember because of an addiction. I want to be remmebered by something great, but that something great doesn't come to me easily. Not when everyone knows your mom is a drug attic and your dads a drunk. Your living from check to check. You have no one that's going to guide you in the right direction. Being the baby of the family is no relief either. All that mean is I'm going to have to leave last. It's like my entire life will be destroyed at anytime. My house is a prison to me. A prison that allows me to leave, but is taunting because I have no where to go. To hide from the darkness that's surrounding me I hide in the fantasy of books. I always have been facinsated by them. They are so fantasizing. They get me out of reality. Books are the only thing that has my attention. I'm yelled constantly for laying around. In my mind though I'm dancing singing bringing joy to my life. Lacking true friends doesn't bother me one bit. I have my own world to be in. Friends would be great to have, but no one has excepted me. I have no problem. As long as the popular kids avoid me I avoid them making no comment among them. I'm not attractive. I have been overweight for as long as I could remember. I don't eat as high as my expectation to. It is 4:42 and all I have eaten is some sweets and a crescent. I'm not very hungry even though it has been four hours since I have last eaten. I have a slow metabolism. -KC

SPOILER ALERT! IF U HAVNT READ THIS,DO NOT READ ON! I hate how she loses her powers. Afte everythingbsshebwent throuh to get them? And her morphing power was brand new! I hate this book. The least Georgea could have done was coming up with a way for her to get her powers back! And write more books! And the book wasnt even that good either.
