Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathryn Erskine
A wonderful introduction to informational text and research for the very young, the "First Biographies" series includes dozens of famous men and women from a wide variety of backgrounds. The printing is clear with much white space, making it approachable and easy to read for the early elementary student. Even the small size of these books makes them very manageable for young hands. The language is simple, and the sentences are short. The information is necessarily distilled to its simplest form and the facts well chosen so as to be most appealing to very young readers. The text is divided into chapters, sometimes consisting of only a page, and there is a table of contents to help the reader. A timeline runs at the bottom of each page throughout the text, corresponding to the information. If a specific date is mentioned in the text, the matching date is highlighted in yellow on that page's timeline. Period paintings, sketches and photographs, as well as contemporary photos, where appropriate, accompany the text. A glossary, index and lists of potential references are helpful and also teach readers the standard format of the more advanced texts they will encounter in school.
