Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Pulitzer Prize winning photographer John Kaplan captures the everyday activities that define the closeness in the relationships of three kids and their moms. There's Little League, lazy days, lots of laughter and obvious love in semi-candid shots. A simple narrative provides opportunity for moms to add personal touches to the text.
School Library Journal
PreS-K-In this photo essay, Kaplan defines "mom" through the eyes of three different youngsters. Portraying single and two-parent families, the text relates routine experiences from the children's daily lives. While mom is the focus of discussion in each "chapter," the first-person narratives become descriptions of the children and their whole families. Kate concentrates on stereotypical female pursuits (except perhaps playing pool) to define her mother's role and their relationship. Jonathan lives with his mother and two siblings, and whether he and his mom are on a roller coaster, cleaning the house, or playing baseball, they spend quality time together. Donald shares equally good times with and support from his mother. The text is built around great full-color shots and is precise and to the point. A sense of fun permeates this excellent choice for libraries that require material for units on Mother's Day and family.-Marsha McGrath, Clearwater Public Library, FL
Lauren Peterson
The unique bond between mother and child is explored through an assortment of photographs showing three real-life moms at work, at play, and in tender, loving moments. The title page credits Kaplan with the writing as well as the photography, but the text is narrated by the children, with the words often little more than mere captions for the photos. This is less the case in the final segment, "Mom and Donald," which effectively focuses on an African American mother and her six-year-old son. Donald talks from the heart, and the pictures, which seem less staged here than in other sections, show real emotion. For a special Mother's Day story hour, use this to inspire children to make their own "Mom and Me" booklets.
