Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Toby Mac's Momentum is the final installment from the dc Talk solo projects, and yields hits with the hard-driving "Extreme Days" and groove-laden "Somebody's Watching." Mac describes his solo effort as "fusion hip-hop," and indeed that description is apt, as Mac overlays dance grooves, mellow R&B, and aggressive metal rock onto a hip-hop foundation. While this sometimes makes Momentum a disjointed affair, it also is thoroughly fascinating. An inveterate barrier-crasher, Mac samples such disparate gems as Diana Ross's "Do You Know" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" in an effort to blur the lines between Christian and mainstream rock. Elsewhere he grapples with barriers of a different type, addressing racism on "What's Goin' Down" and sexual abuse on "Irene." There's also a nice cameo from contemporary gospel giant Kirk Franklin, who lends vocals to the infectious "J-Train." Momentum is a creative left turn for Mac, and what a fun ride it is.
All Music Guide - Ashleigh Kittle
In 2001, dc Talk frontman tobyMac released his first solo project, Momentum. For the artist, also known as Toby McKeehan, the album marked a return to his musical roots, with a blending of hip-hop, rock, rap, pop, and R&B styles. In an interview with his label, ForeFront Records, tobyMac said that the album began "with my wife and I sitting down and praying, seeing if I was supposed to make a record on my own." "I wasn't feeling all that creative at the end of dc Talk's Supernatural tour, so we prayed a real specific prayer," tobyMac continued. "Once I felt I was supposed to do this, then we began praying for creativity. All of a sudden, there was this outpouring…basically a blank canvas with limitless colors." Fresh and innovative, the project leaves no room for mediocrity. Each track stands on its own, with no two tracks merging, but remaining clearly distinct while still managing to contribute to the album's unified whole. Accessible to a variety of musical tastes, the songs range from the intense, guitar-beat-rhythm-fused "Let's Get This Party Started" to the R&B-influenced "Irene," which opens with the sounds of Latin guitars and quickly shifts to rap. Momentum, an album reminiscent of dc Talk's early work, sets itself apart as a project highly deserving of the title "much anticipated." It is intricately detailed with layers of musical depth, combined with strong social messages such as racial reconciliation. And so it is with this release that tobyMac continues to reveal that he is indeed a modern day Renaissance man.

    From a back country 14-year-old

Hey, what can I say, I love it! Irene is my favorite song. And this is how I can tell a really great rap cd- even my sister likes it. :0 Wow! She usually listens to Caedmons Call (I'm not knocking it, they're all right too) but she actually LIKES this.

    momentum

Toby Macs solo album-Momentum, is kind of my guilty pleasure because i can't help but catch strangely in no way offensive lines that im so not used to hearing anymore and at the same time i cant help but let loose to it and totally love it. i have a strong affinity for this cd...it takes that kind of hard metal back to where it should be...loud, hard, and fun...none of this lincoln park craap you hear mimicked all the time that gets on your nerves and makes you curse metal and feel like a grandpa nah..this is the good stuff that you cant deny liking. it triggers everyones hidden desire for r&b and hip-hop as well weather they knew they had it or not making you feel very full of soul and mixes all these genres with something you dare not nor know how to label. what can i say? i listened to dc talk as a kid and this was a great reminder of that kind of musical genius...is there gonna be another?

    Absolutely terrific!!!!!!!

This is an awsome album. This was the first dc Talk album i got, and after i listened to it, i wanted all of the dc Talk albums, as long as Toby Mac was in it. Its hard rock is fun to listen to, and the song Irene and Love is in the House dim it down a bit, so it is a perfect album to listen to.

    this CD is THE BOMB

Toby Mac has really come a long way in his musical career. With musical guest 'Kirk Franklin' Toby Mac has thrown together an amazing mixture of hip hop and hard rock. If you like music that breaks through cultural and ethnic barriers then this is the CD for you.

    This roxx

The first time I heard this CD I was in my friend's car on the way to Michigan for a weekend at her lake house. But that's not important. I was looking through her CD's and found this CD. I asked her who Tobymac was and she said, "he's Toby McKeehan from dc talk, remeber".Being a huge fan of dc Talk, I freaked out. "They split up?!" I thought "oh no this is the end". Until she started the CD. I love every track. The message stuck with me. It mixes rock and r&b in a truly awesome way. My recomendation: BUY THIS!

Excellent - definately the strongest of the 3 solo CDs

Well DC Talk's SOLO project is going good, but after their solo CD, I was begging to get the individual albums. I got Toby Mac's CD becuase i loved the song ''Extreme Days'' and hoped his CD would be great. I got what i wanted. Every song on this CD is great, it can rock, it can groove, and it sure can funk. Toby has deffinately made the best of the 3 solo CDs. This is the best one, having hard hitting rocking songs (Extreme Days, Momentum, Get the Party Started), funky rapping songs (Somebodys Watching, Irene), and a whole lot more.

    Can't be beat

When i first went out to get this cd the only song i had heard off of it was Extreme Days & that was reason enough to buy it even if the rest of the cd wasent that good... But man, i was totally blown away! This is the best cd of all time!!! Toby Rocks from the first time you hit play down to the very end. I love the Guitar solo background touch on the song Irene & the message really speaks to me. I expect Extreme days & Momentum to be to HUGE hits for a long time to come as well as the extra hard rock song Yours! When i first went to buy this album i thought it was going to be good, but man i was way off, this album isn't good it's legendary & deserves it's place above all the top secular artist this year, no one came close to the explosion Toby brought. It's sad he won't get noticed as much as he should just because he's a ''Christian Artist''. Even if you don't like hard rock this album has songs on it for you. I would suggest this album above any other if you don't have it you should. Oh & one more thing be sure to listen to the words, they could change your life!

    This album is smooth!

This is the CD that goes everywhere. I don't want to show my age here, but the incorporation of old music like the Theme from Mahogany (1970's) and Steven Stills Stop, hey, what's that sound, make this music just plain old fun to listen to! The songs are funky so be prepared to ''get down with your bad self.'' Toby has found a gem in the leading lady on this one, Joanna Valencia is so smooth, her voice just melts like butter! Crank up the volume to an unacceptable level and enjoy, this is good clean fun. For the members of DC Talk to make three separate CD's seemed like a cheap marketing ploy, but you won't be disappointed by this one, The guys have a lot to offer individually!

    An Incredible union!

Toby Mac's ''MOMENTUM'' is a PHAT disc! Buy it today! Now, let me explain why! Over the years, rock & hip-hop music has found a place in unity. R&B elements made its way on this album as well. MOMENTUM blends hip-hop & rock like no other, and adds a taste of R&B grooves! You can rock to it! You can bump to it! You can groove to it! ''Get yo rock, bump and groove on'', all on one disc! Momentum!!!!
