The son of Johnny Cash and June Carter, Grammy Award-winning producer John Carter Cash carries on his family's lyrical legacy with his new book. The story tells the tale of the love of a mother for her child, following a mother, a son, and their dog on a magical adventure around the world and across the sky. The text is rhythmic and easy to read aloud, drawing the reader through the story. The Americana-style illustrations are clear and wonderfully distinct, effortlessly capturing the spirit of the text and drawing the close attention of the reader who is sure to pore over the text and pictures of each page. Mama Loves Her Little Son would be a great choice for a story time, display, or book-list on Mother's Day. This book is recommended for purchase by school media centers and public libraries and would make a wonderful addition to any picture book collection. Reviewer: Meagan Albright

As long as there are parents and grandparents, there will be a market for sweet, rhyming odes to the love of a mother for her son. Children, however, tend to be a much tougher audience. Appealing characters, clearly conveyed emotions and interesting activity all help, as does the quality of the writing and illustrations. In this case, neither story nor pictures seem likely to engage listeners. The curly-haired, fair-skinned boy and his slim, blond mom pose stiffly in idealized settings inspired by the author's (unfortunately predictable) litany of love. Burckhardt's illustrations have the appearance of paint on wood, giving them an Americana folk art feel that may further distance readers. Rhymes aren't always successful (or even attempted), the rhythm is uneven and the text is often abstract and occasionally confusing. Mother's love is "eager as a seed under snow" and "As far away as China," though one suspects that Cash means it would reach that far. While the author's memories of his mother are apparently heartfelt, his tribute is likely to have limited appeal. (Picture book. 3-6)

"I see this book as the second verse of a favorite family song, and I'm grateful to John Carter for asking me to accompany him on it." Marc lives with his wife Janice in Austin, Texas.

    Highly Recommend this book. Very nicely written.

    I have bought this book and the Daddy Loves his little Girl book for several new babies in my family and for friends. Love these books so much. The poetry and illustrations are so beautiful. I highly recommend these books to anyone who is looking for a baby shower gift.

    Momma loves her little son

    I have grandchildren and read many, many books. This is the sweetest book I have read in a long time. His mother would be so proud to know she left behind such sweet memories with her son. I would recommend this book to anyone with children or grandchilren. I do hope John Carter writes mores books like this one. I would certainly buy them.
