Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Two books in one, Mommy Loves Her Baby flips over to begin Daddy Loves His Baby by Tara Jaye Morrow, illus. by Tiphanie Beeke. "Mommy loves her baby like the penguins love to slide,/ like hyenas love to giggle/ and chameleons love to hide." A full-page rendering of a penguin riding its mother's back down an icy slope appears opposite two inset paintings of the other two animal families. The juxtaposition of full-bleed and smaller inset illustrations of various animal families keeps the energy high, and the final portrait of human parent and child brings the message home. Children's Literature
Sometimes it is hard to tell a child how much they are loved. In this charming and colorful book the author shows a child that a mother's love is as much a part of her as the love a fish has for the sea; as much a part of her as the love an eagle has for soaring in the sky; and as much a part of her as the love that a horse has to gallop. A mother's love is something that baby can always reply on. The imagery shifts between the humorous, the tender and the magnificent. Simple rhymes tie these images together, slipping off the tongue easily as the pages are turned. The childlike illustrations make the message of the book all that more intimate and render it more appealing to a small person needing to be reminded that they are much loved. A perfect book for reading out loud just before bedtime, this book would make a wonderful gift for a mother-to-be or for mother's day. When you flfip the book, there is another warm parental story. All too often a father's love is not given its due. In this delightful, colorful picture book, we are reminded that a father's love for his baby is deep and is an essential part of who he is. In fact a daddy loves his baby with the same love that a butterfly likes to fly; with the same love that a cheetah loves to run; and with the same love that birds love to sing. A father's love will always be there. The author also uses humor to describe a father's love saying that it is like the love a llama has to lick and the love a donkey has to kick. Simple rhymes compliment the naïve illustrations and make this a perfect bed-time book. This book would be a wonderful gift for a father-to-be or for father's day. 2003, HarperCollins,

PreS-This delightfully sentimental concept book is perfect for sharing. Read one way, a mother's love for her child is likened to the way "fishies love the seas, like the monkeys love bananas and the squirrels love the trees." The animal comparisons continue with sliding penguins, giggling hyenas, roaring lions, peeping chicks, and more. When the book is reversed, the whimsical rhymes continue and listeners will hear how Daddy loves his baby "like the leopards love to pounce, like the bumblebees love buzzing and the bunnies love to bounce." Both texts end with the statement that Mommy or Daddy loves baby because it is "the sweetest little, cutest little YOU!" Beeke's watercolor animal creations help keep the sweetness in check. The playful animals are content and friendly (though the snapping gator does have a mischievous gleam). Kittens cuddle, and a mother bear gazes fondly at her sleeping cubs. Cozy domesticity reigns throughout, starting with a toddler in a hooded bathrobe on the title page. This is a striking book, making full use of Beeke's warm palette and creatively fresh perspectives. Preschoolers and their caregivers will find many things to enjoy in this charming picture book.-Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
This creative take on the familiar theme of parental love is two stories in one. Depending on which is begun first, a father or mother likens his or her parental love to all kinds of things animals love to do: "Daddy loves his baby like gorillas love to swing," "Mommy loves her baby like the horsies love to gallop." Halfway through, readers flip the book over and start at the beginning again, with the other parent. Kids may wonder why parents' love must be described separately; the answer lies in how innovative and fun this format is. For those children whose parents don't live together, it will be refreshing to see a celebration of parental love not necessarily focused on a nuclear family. The impressionistic illustrations in soft, bright colors add to the warmth; they are slightly rough, as if they could have been painted by a child. The type, creatively placed in waves and slanting lines, is black except for the names of the animals: the letters in the word "bumblebees" alternate between yellow and black, "robin" is in red, and so on. This comforting volume assures young readers that a parent's love is as natural, innate, and immutable as all the things that come naturally to the animals. (Picture book. 1-3)

    My kids love this book!

Both my now 4 year old and almost 2 year old LOVE this book! We got it when our son was an infant and it became one of his favorites and my daughter also thinks it's great. The artwork is fun with great verse. My kids love to make the animal sounds and say many of the lines with me - they have it memorized.

    my daughter's FAVORITE book!

We got this when she turned 1 and it was a book we read every night. She is now 2 and this is her FAVORITE. She 'reads' it to her self, loves flipping from mommy side to daddy side, learned animal names and sounds from it. Beautiful book.

    Mommy loves this Book!

I've read it to my son every night since the day I brought him home from the hospital. He's now 1 1/2 and he still sits still for it. (It's just about the only book he'll sit still for!) The pictures and words are a great reminder of how much Mommy loves her baby and after we're done, we flip it over and start reading how much Daddy loves his baby! Great, great book!

My little 3 month old daughter loves this book! She likes to look at the pictures and every day we say over and over mommy loves her baby - daddy loves his baby! It's such a sweet story.
