“Delightful.”
School Library Journal
PreS-K-Many kinds of animal mothers and babies come together in this beautifully illustrated story. "Mommy LOUD/Mommy STOMP" shows two elephants splashing and spraying, followed by "Mommy munch and Mommy chomp!" represented by giraffes and tigers respectively. To indicate how tall the giraffes are, readers must tilt the book and view the page lengthwise. The creatures are painted in bright colors and set against mostly white backgrounds. With their expressive faces, they exude a comfortable sweetness. Phrases like "Mommy SCARY!" for an alligator and "Mommy chubby" for a sow might be questionable to young children, but overall the creative wording and joyful imagery outweigh such concerns. This book depicts a special bond in a merry way and will be a lovely supplement to most collections.-Linda M. Kenton, San Rafael Public Library, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Author Warnes teams up with his illustrator wife to create a salute to mothers of all types. Simple, rhyming text characterizes the mostly physical attributes of various animal mothers. Spanning a broad spectrum of species, Warnes's choices include creatures from the smallest winged insect to the tallest giraffe. The sing-song cadence of the rhymes is naturally suited for read-aloud sessions with the very young. Although some human mothers could take umbrage at the slightly disparaging remarks that arise from rather forced rhymes, such as "Mommy grubby / . . . Mommy chubby" and "Mommy lazy / clumsy Mommy-whoopsy-daisy," when combined with Chapman's comically detailed illustrations, these comments lean more towards a spirit of whimsy rather than casting aspersions. While Chapman's charmingly depicted creatures range from exotic lemurs and anteaters to more familiar barnyard inhabitants, the devoted connection between the mothers and their offspring becomes the universal theme that unites them all. Scoring high on the exuberance scale, the rollicking recital is bound to be warmly embraced by the preschool set. (Picture book. 3-5)

Hopefully we've come up with something that's fun to read out loud." Jane, the best-selling illustrator of Bear Snores On and Bear Wants More by Karma Wilson, enjoyed painting a few of the more obscure animals as well as old children's-book favorites.
