Little Fox and Mommy Fox are enjoying a pleasant autumn day. Little Fox tries catching falling leaves, but soon discovers there are too many to catch them all. He looks to the top of trees and thinks they go to the top of the sky. Mommy Fox tells him something goes higher. As the pattern continues, Little Fox contemplates the flights of bees and birds. He admires a rainbow and clouds. The sun and moon are high in the sky, but there are stars beyond them. As they gaze into the night sky, Mommy Fox explains that the sky goes on and on forever. It has no beginning and it has no end, just like the love Mommy Fox has for Little Fox, her own little star. They cuddle together as Little Fox falls asleep. Large, colorful illustrations feature appealing foxes with oversized heads walking and standing on their hind legs as they wander through a peaceful forest. A comforting bedtime story. While catching leaves one fall day, Little Fox wonders where the top of the sky is. With gentle guidance in the form of questions based on their surroundings, Mommy Fox leads her son to puzzle out the answer to his question. Bees fly higher than the treetops, but birds fly even higher. After a rain, a rainbow arches over everything, but clouds float above that. Higher still are the sun and moon, and finally the stars. But even they are not the top-the sky goes on forever. Of course, this leads Little Fox to ask where the sky begins. Mommy's answer will resound with even the littlest listeners: "The sky is just like love. . . . It never ends. And it starts right here with my own little star." Beardshaw's acrylics are filled with the sights of an autumn forest-mushrooms, falling leaves depicted in amazing detail and yellowing ferns. While her foxes lack variety in facial expression, the tender love between mother and son and their joy in the everyday is clearly portrayed. Fits easily on the "How-much-I-love-you" shelf.
