Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Like other books in the "Springboards into Science Series," Monarch Butterfly offers young readers a combination of beautifully detailed photographs and factual information concerning the lifecycle of the Monarch Butterfly. The photographs continue to be strength in this series, although I did find the text more engaging than the narrative found in Ladybug, another book in the series. And, as with other books in the series, readers are given the opportunity to remember and possibly internalize the steps in the lifecycle of the monarch butterfly, another nod to consistency that I think is important in texts for young readers. The additional glossary, page of "insect" activities, and suggestions for further study also support the mission of this book. The books in this series are consistent in their approach to providing information about various insects to their young readers and definitely have a place in libraries to support student research. However, it is important to note that the books in this series are probably not the types of books parents will choose for entertainment reading with their children. 2001, Gareth Stevens Publishing,
