Meet the Author

Peter King joined Sports Illustrated as a staff writer in 1989 after spending nearly a decade as an award-winning newspaper journalist. Now a senior writer at the magazine, he is Sports Illustrated's primary NFL expert and is one of the country's premier pro football writers. King is also a key contributor to SI.com, which includes his popular column, "Monday Morning Quarterback."

King has also served as an on-air reporter for ABC's Monday Night Football, NBC's Football Night in America, CNN's NFL Preview, and as managing editor for HBO's award-winning "Inside the NFL'' show. He hosts a show on Sirius NFL Radio.

Following graduation from Ohio University in 1979, where he earned a B.A. in journalism, King covered college athletics and professional football for the Cincinnati Enquirer for five years. Following that stint, he covered pro football for Newsday, in New York, from 1985 to 1989.

King has won two Associated Press Sports Editors awards for excellence in sports journalism.

    Best From The Best

    Peter King is not just the best sports writer in America, he's one of the best writers period. The mark of any good writer is his ability to poke fun at himself and at his subject at the same time, and Peter's wonderful sense of humor, not to mention his encyclopedic knowledge of American football, comes through in every one of the vintage columns. He is, of course, really writing about American culture, and few writers do it as well, as intimately and naturally as Peter King. This terrific collection of his best columns range from the ridiculous to the touching (my favorite is the one of the death of Tony Dungy's son). Taken together, they speak volumes about our preoccupation with football, its place in American life, its sometimes ridiculous athletes and preposterous coaches, the cult of hero worship, and, most of all, what it means to be a fan. That's Peter's great secret and gift -- he's one of us, a fan, writing to us directly. That's why every page sounds authentic and is so entertaining. SI did a good job packaging this book; it's well designed and produced. I'm giving it as Christmas gifts to my two grown sons, Giants fans, and, of course, I'm going to keep my own copy handy so I can dip into it whenever I need a lift. A wonderful read.

    Great read for football fans (and others)

    A very interesting collection that appeals to both hard-core football junkies and anyone interested in the insider's view of professional sports. The book includes many great stories about big football games, star players and current issues affecting the NFL. King also includes his personal opinions about the state of the NFL in a very compelling manner (as well as some funny and touching personal anecdotes).

    It's a quick read that makes you want more. I think it will make a great holdiay gift and highly recommend it.

    The book is about football, and more.

    I've read Peter King's "Monday Morning Quarterback'' column for years. This has some classic columns, and it has new stuff--lists of the top players of all time and today, how he'd fix the game, etc. I feel like he takes me into players' lives better than anyone who covers pro football. Plus, he's human. I cried when he wrote about the death of his dog and the inspiration stories of his daughter's softball game. I highly recommend the book.

    Are you kidding!!!

    I love football- Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the ladies, but football rules my life, both college and pro. I've read SI and SI.com for years, and live and die by Peter King and Stewart Mandel. I'm sorry to say that King's book was disappointing- it's a collection of his columns. Mandel wrote a real book about the college football stuff that makes us go, "What? I didn't know that." King (supposedly) got paid to have someone else take his columns and put them in a book subtitled, "A fully caffeinated guide to everything you need to know about the NFL." So, I get to read about Brett Favre in 2001? What about revenue sharing? What about the NFLPA and the new CBA- How does THAT work? What really sucks about this book is this: I wanted to hear what a smart guy thought about football. Someone told him that I wanted to hear what a smart guy thought about coffee, airlines, hotels. Listen, Peter King is widely read because of football. If I want to know what's cool, and what's not, I'll watch MTV. If I want to read something irrelevant, I'll read the minutes from the health care debate, not stuff from ten years ago. King is dangerously close to veering into the self-righteous, holier than thou, do as I say scene inhabited by Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan. For my money, I'm switching to Banks and Posnanski. Maybe they'll write a real book about the NFL. God, I miss Dr. Z.

    After twenty years with Sports Illustrated, Peter King is thought of as one of the experts in reporting the game of football. In his book, MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK, he touches on a variety of subject matter other than football. He is a real fan of girl's softball games and has a good friend in the armed services that heads an Improvised Explosive Devices platoon. At age 34, this man hopes to make it out of Iraq alive and bring his men home safely.

    So, King's Monday Morning Quarterback column isn't all football. It has been said that he adds too much of his personal life in his reporting, but his followers would beg to differ with that opinion.

    Any football fan would surely love this book as it takes a reader though the paces of the game, the players and the coaches that lead these teams in their efforts. It is an informal look at the game of football with a touch of statistical information as well.

    If you are looking for a gift for that man or woman who can't get through a weekend without football.this book is a good buy!

    Just a repackaging of MMQB online

    This book is primarily just a collection of King's previous MMQB articles, including even the tedious and annoying non-football related filler material (about his daughters, Starbucks, travel, etc.) which have no place in a book by a professional journalist. There is scant new material not available online, and certainly not enough to warrant purchasing this book.
