    De brillantes nouvelles

    Ce recueil se compose de huit nouvelles. Toutes ces nouvelles de M. Le Clézio ont ceci en commun : Les forces de la Nature ¿ le soleil, la mer, le vent, le feu ¿ sont plus important que les personnages. Et les personnages principaux sont des enfants ou des adolescents.<BR/>Trois nouvelles traite de ce que l¿on pourrait appeler des extases ou des expériences hors de soi: <BR/>Dans " La montagne du dieu vivant," un garçon qui s¿appelle Jon fait l¿ascension d¿une montagne volcanique. Au sommet, "il perdait son corps, et son poids"; et "il flottait, couché sur le dos gris des nuages. . . "<BR/>Dans "La roue d¿eau," un garçon qui s¿appelle Juba passe une journée quelque part au nord de l¿Afrique en surveillant une noria que font marcher deux b¿ufs. Il songe à un autre Juba, le roi Juba. Le garçon Juba se trouve transporté à la ville de Yol, au pays d¿Himyar, au moment où le roi Juba et sa femme, la reine Cléopâtre Sélène, se présentent à leurs sujets. Il y a peu de vraie histoire dans ce récit de M. Le Clézio. Il est vrai que sur les ordres de son ami Octavien (Auguste César), Juba II (v. 52 av. J-C -- v. 23 ap. J-C) s¿est marié avec Cléopâtre Sélène (40 av. J-C -- 6 ap. J-C), sa camarade d¿enfance; et qu¿il a régné sur la Mauritanie comme représentant d¿Octavien. Mais pour autant que je sache, Juba II n¿a jamais posé le pied sur Himyar ou même sur l¿Arabie. <BR/>Dans « Lullaby » une adolescente se décide de ne plus aller à l¿école. Pendant quelques jours, elle explore le bord de la mer, où elle découvre des écritures mystérieuses sur de grands rochers et où elle arrive enfin à une maison abandonnée ¿ maison du style grec, portant sur le chapiteau le mot grec « ¿¿¿¿¿¿. » M. Le Clézio rend ce mot comme « Karisma. » Je crois qu¿en français, on pourrait dire « Aubaine. » La description de M. Le Clézio de l¿extase de Lullaby me semble merveilleuse: "Lullaby sentait son corps s¿ouvrir, très doucement, comme une porte, et elle attendait de rejoindre la mer. Elle savait qu¿elle allait voir cela, bientôt, alors elle ne pensait à rien, elle ne voulait rien d'autre. Son corps resterait loin en arrière . . . "<BR/>Toutes ces nouvelles sont dignes du Nobel lauréate qui les a écrites. À mon avis, on peut classifier les nouvelles de M. Le Clézio -- Lullaby en particulier parmi les meilleures nouvelles de la langue française, à coté des ¿uvres de Prosper Mérimée et de Guy de Maupassant.
