Not to be confused with various Dennis Brown anthologies bearing the same name, MONEY IN MY POCKET is one of the revered reggae crooner's finest 1980s albums. On this outing, the smooth-voiced Jamaican performer presents an update of the sauntering title track, previously a hit for him in the '70s, which is paired in a medley with "Ah So We Stay." Other highlights of this solid set include the horn-laden "I Am the Conqueror" as well as the highly rhythmic "No More Shall I Roam," which reveals a slightly grittier quality in Brown's voice. Unlike many of the singer's records of this era, MONEY IN MY POCKET largely steers clear of the popular Lovers Rock style, opting instead for more straightforward, socially conscious Rasta themes (see the poignant "Changing Times"). Although it lacks some of the youthful verve of Brown's late-'70s recordings, MONEY finds him at the height of his vocal powers, making it one of the most notable releases in his extensive catalogue.
