Monkey Business: Fun with Idioms

Overview

A creative and playful approach to idioms invites children to have fun with phrases that can be tricky to understand. Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Humor and creativity are used to describe different idioms . . . reading this book with an adult increases early literacy skills."  —Toy Tips Magazine

"A springboard to imaginative drawings of our own . . . useful for all children fascinated by English language and its silly sayings."  —The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

Best of all is the book's message that wordplay is fun-if you put your best foot forward.
Toy Tips Magazine
Humor and creativity are used to describe different idioms. . . reading this book with an adult increases early literacy skills.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
It is not until the end of the book that readers find out what an idiom is "…an expression that doesn't mean what you might expect from the meaning of the individual words." The expressions that are illustrated in the book are reprised on the closing pages to explain what the expression means. For example "I'll give you a hand means I will help you." The books in this series "Milet Wordwise" presume that the reader has some understanding of language or the reader would be totally lost. Children, teachers, and parents will find this book amusing, especially the illustrations, and it is an easy way to explain idioms, but I would strongly recommend providing the definition of what an idiom is first.
