Editorial Reviews

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
A stunningly realized visual tour de force. Compositions of power and authority provide a visual feast...the plot is action-packed.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Caldecott Medalist Young (Lon Po Po) opts for elegance in this deceptively simple adaptation of Chinese myth. In piquant phrases and minimalist collages, he summarizes the antics of the Monkey King, a trickster hero. Monkey has learned "the art of turning cloud somersaults, riding the wind, changing shape, and disappearing in the blink of an eye," and he uses his magic for mischief. While serving the Jade Emperor, he "plucked all the forbidden fruit from the immortal peach tree and gobbled them up. Then he tumbled home before anyone could punish him." Monkey's evocatively named opponents, including Dragon King and Red Beard Bandit, cannot defeat him, and finally Jade Emperor seeks Buddha's intervention. In an impressive gatefold spread, Monkey is trapped in the shadowy Five Finger Mountain, actually Buddha's obsidian hand. Upon his release 500 years later, Monkey improves his behavior on the path to enlightenment--"but it wasn't always easy to stay good." Young bases this distilled saga on Wu Cheng'en's Buddhist epic, The Journey to the West, which he glancingly mentions in an afterword. The tale may be better suited to older readers who can handle its epic qualities and some characters' cameo appearances. His cut-paper compositions, in earthy shades of spice and sky, might be described as freestyle; pencil marks remain visible and shapes are imperfectly carved, requiring plenty of imagination. Young's dynamic artwork and his mercurial transitions between spreads mimic Monkey's own shape-shifting, making for deliciously unpredictable reading. All ages. (Mar.) Children's Literature
The trickster Monkey of Chinese legend has many adventures in this tale, with similarities to some western stories, but with unusual overtones. He overcomes opponents like Red Beard, Dragon King, even Jade Emperor. Finally challenged by Buddha himself, Monkey loses his magical powers. Only in traveling as a disciple to a holy monk does he admit his weakness and redeem himself. The story introduces aspects of a less familiar culture and its history along with a flavor of Buddhist philosophy. As an introduction to the lengthy and complex classic Chinese epic, Journey to the West, the story unfolds in a series of episodes for which Young's visual setting provides a consistent narrative flow. Using cut papers of various sorts, from delicately textured rice papers to ornately patterned cuttings, he creates captivating characters and mystic landscapes. When he finds the double page inadequate, he designs both vertical and horizontal foldouts. The power of his depiction of the Buddha's black hand against a gold background convinces us of his potency, while other more subtly designed scenes deserve lingering attention. The visuals help us come to grips with an unfamiliar form of a spiritual journey. The author's note adds information. 2001, HarperCollins, $16.95. Ages 4 to 8. K-Gr 3-A rock explodes, a monkey emerges, and thus begins a very abbreviated version of the first part of the Chinese epic, Journey to the West. Following his dramatic creation, Monkey evolves into a trickster and entangles himself in many adventures, outwitting numerous adversaries and falling out of grace with others. His encounters with mortals, animals, and deities reveal his multifaceted character; at times, greedy and conniving, he can also be resourceful and loyal. And as he serves as a disciple to holy monk Tang, he learns a lesson about admitting to weakness-but "Did Monkey's humility last? That's another story for another book." Vibrant paper collages set against purple and gold backgrounds swirl and plunge with energetic Monkey and reinforce his quicksilver nature. However, the sheer number of characters he meets, and escapades in which he indulges, can be overwhelming, especially since they are, of necessity, briefly introduced. Even the striking illustrations (including an extravagant double gatefold) are confusing at times. The typestyle is large but the vocabulary will challenge readers attracted to the open format. The author provides a helpful list of major characters with a one or two sentence summary of their roles in the saga as well as a more detailed history of the epic itself. This is a simplified and serviceable introduction to a long and complex Chinese tale but its staccato presentation is likely to leave young listeners confused and more than a bit breathless.-Carol Ann Wilson, Westfield Memorial Library, NJ Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Using a combination of handmade and bought papers, Young has created a dazzling collage adaptation of the traditional Chinese legend of the Monkey King. Brilliant shades of pink, purple, red, orange, gold, and green are offset by wispy whites and stark blacks on warm earth-toned backgrounds. The colors often leap and swirl across the pages, tracing the trajectories of Monkey's energetic somersaults and mirroring his irrepressible personality. Always restless and eager for new adventures, Monkey simply can't keep out of trouble. Born from an exploding rock, he fights the fierce Red Beard Bandit, steals a golden pillar from the underwater palace of the Dragon King, and gobbles up all the forbidden fruit from Jade King's immortal peach tree. The centerpiece of the book, and of Monkey's adventures, takes place on pages that fold out both horizontally and vertically as Monkey leaps to a place that he thinks is the end of the earth, but that turns out to be the upraised hand of Buddha. He scribbles,"Monkey was here," thinking he has triumphed, but in fact he is trapped. After 500 years of captivity, he is freed to have a few more adventures before the end of the book, which concludes when he learns that there is"strength in admitting to weakness." The narrator leaves the reader with a question and an answer—"Did Monkey's humility last? That's another story for another book." Young's prose is spare, and the placement of the words is brilliantly integrated into his page designs. An author's note provides information on the Chinese epic Journey to the West, from which these episodes have been adapted. There is also a list of characters with their descriptions. Thisvisually andthematicallyrich creation by one of our finest picture book artists is wonderful both to read aloud and to peruse and ponder at leisure. (Picture book/folktale. All ages)
