This book may be repetitive but that's because the legend was constantly being changed and added on to so it tell you every version of the story. I think that the Monkey king is the most dynamic and should be considered one of the best literary characters ever. the story should be taken as a whole and not from bits and pieces to fully appreciate the book and learn its metaphors and complex meanings. you ca learn a lot of the people's republic of china from the book. Once you get past the repetitive story telling you'll enjoy the book.

I have come to hate the monkey king after reading this book. Do not waste your money. Its REALLY long and repetative less than a quarter of the way through I was hoping it would be like many other stores the Chinese love and one of the main characters would tragically die to save the others. They were all so annoying I didn't care if any of the survived. I won't say if any died or not but this book is a waste of your time to read. I know ita one of the 4 classic Chinese works but it is painful and annoying to read. I wouldn't waste my time or money on it. And would only recommend the book to someone if I wanted to be cruel to torture them knowing they always finish the books they start reading. If you want to know about the Monkey King to be able to talk to a Chinese friend about it, look it up on the internet to save your time, money, and sanity.
