Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
This launch title of another new series in Scholastic’s “Branches” line of heavily illustrated early chapter books introduces emerging readers to overly energetic Clyde who is constantly engaging in monkey business. When Clyde, in his usual mischievous way, eats a banana shot through with gamma rays on a school field trip to the science museum, he finds that he now periodically turns into an actual monkey—a monkey that can solve mysteries, like the disappearance of the museum’s priceless golden monkey on the day of the class trip! Whenever Clyde has a monkey episode, the format of the book changes from standard text (with plenty of accompanying illustrations) to graphic novel/comic strip, a useful way to visually mark Clyde’s transition. His exuberant but good-natured naughtiness, ineffectually reined in by his sensible twin Claudia (“I was the twin full of energy. Claudia was the twin full of brains”), has plenty of reader appeal, and the fast-paced story should hold the interest of easily distractible, reluctant readers like Clyde himself. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.; Ages 6 to 8.
