Overview

Probably the most popular book in the history of the Far East, this classic sixteenth century novel is a combination of picaresque novel and folk epic that mixes satire, allegory, and history into a rollicking adventure. It is the story of the roguish Monkey and his encounters with major and minor spirits, gods, demigods, demons, ogres, monsters, and fairies. This translation, by the distinguished scholar Arthur Waley, is the first accurate English version; it makes available to the Western reader a faithful reproduction of the spirit and meaning of the original.

This is one of the greatest books i've ever read. I've read it over 4 times and am doing a 50 page project for school based upon it. It has absoloutly everything a great story needs: comedy, action, drama, and a really cool monkey... the only thing that dissapointed me is that it's not a full translation. Most of you aren't really interested in reading the 1800 page version.. yet. Just read this one, it's about 300 pages and you'll wish you had the full-length version. This book really has a great message, and in some small way I'd have to say its changes my life for the better. You really should try reading this one....

I read this entire book and it happenes to be 1800 pages long. I hate to read being at the age of 14 and all but loved this book or should I say books. The story was great, I loved reading the adventures of Monkey. Also I am a Dragonball Fan. I know everything about every season, every charecter, every series, you name it I know it. But heres something most of you Dragonball fans didnt know. This book was what inspired and influenced alot of the Dragonball series. Dragonball could have been about something completly diffrent if it werent for this popular chinesse story. This is a book that every true Dragonball fan should have.

This book is a must read for individuals interested in philosophy and eastern religions. The book is both a comedy and a book that allows the reader to evaluate the philosophy of their own life.
