Glissant's (French, City U. of New York-Graduate Center) play, published in 1961 and first staged in Paris in 1977, tells the story of Francoise-Domingue Toussaint L'ouverture (1743-1803) and the central role he played in a slave rebellion in what is now Haiti that was an almost unknown episode in the French Revolution played out in the Americas. Dash (French, New York U.) presents an English version based on the French original in collaboration with the author to celebrate the bicentennial of Toussaint's death.
