Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
A monster beach party is about to occur and Gus drives them there. Of course Vlad the vampire needs both of his coffins put on the sand. They set up things and begin to prepare the grill for lunch. Meanwhile, a green monster is watching what is going on and when he walks up to say hello, everyone just stands there in surprise. He introduces himself as Gil and they all seem to get along well. Gil hates the ocean and tells them that there are scary fish in the water. When they tell him that he is a fish, Gil leave the party and goes back to his cave to think about that. The group follows him and they all decide to go in the ocean and put on scuba gear...even Gil the fish has scuba gear. They head out in the ocean where they find a cave. A giant squid causes problems and it is up to Gil to save the group. This book is well written and is great for both boys and girls. The illustrations add much excitement to the story. At the beginning of the book there are two pages with pictures of the Monsters with their names and the monster they portray. At the end of the book, the author has thoughtfully provided a glossary, discussion questions, writing prompts, and a mini biography. Two pages are provided for illustrations of the other "Mighty Monsters" adventure books. Graphic novels are favorites of mine because both reluctant and advanced readers can enjoy them. This book would be great in both home and classroom libraries. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs

Within a year, the company won many awards including the Shuster Award for Outstanding Publisher and the Moonbeam Award for top children's graphic novel. O'Reilly also won the Top 40 Under 40 award from the city of Vancouver and authored "The Clockwork Girl" for Top Graphic Novel at Book Expo America in 2009. Currently, O'Reilly is one of the most prolific independent comic book writers in Canada. While showing no signs of slowing down in comics, he now writes screenplays and adapts his creations for the big screen.
