Children's Literature
There is more to this story than one might think. A close look at the cover certainly gives a big clue. Buddy Wilson and his classmates have been asked to keep a nature diary for a week. Buddy hates to write so this really appears to be an onerous assignment. On the way home he is caught up watching a road being constructed. The cut through a hill has revealed various layers of rock. He thinks this might be a good subject for his diary entries. A run-in with his classmate Harriet and a general attitude on the part of is parents that he is guilty of messing up her project lead him to make his observations late at night. What he sees is not real, but it is based on the dinosaur bones uncovered by the construction crew. Buddy becomes a local celebrity and finishes his writing assignment with a real flourish. A good story, well written and empowering for kids. 2002 (orig. 1990), Crabtree,
