Overview

From Lisi Harrison, the New York Times bestselling author of The Clique and Alphas, comes a new series with a fresh twist on high school, romance, and the "horrors" of trying to fit in.

The monster community has kept a low profile at the local high school, but when two new girls enroll, the town will never be the same. Created just fifteen days ago, Frankie Stein is psyched to trade her father's formaldehyde-smelling basement lab for parties and prom.

But with a student body totally freaked out by rumors of monsters stalking the halls, Frankie learns that high school can be rough for a chic freak like her. She thinks she finds a friend in fellow new student Melody Carver-but can a "normie" be trusted with her big secret?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda Ledbetter
Melody Carver and Frankie Stein begin their sophomore year as new students at Merston High School in Salem, Oregon. Leaving the fast-paced, California lifestyle behind, Melody and her parents hope that the cleaner Oregon air will prove easier for Melody's asthmatic lungs to handle, though her older sister continually puts her down for being the cause of their family's relocation. For Frankie, high school is not all that is new. Her parents are descendants of the original Frankenstein's monster, and they have just created her in their own laboratory. Both Frankie and Melody find adjusting to their new school to be a struggle, complete with typical high school drama. At Merston High, however, monsters attend classes side-by-side with "normie" teenagers, while trying to maintain secrecy about their families and adding to high school angst. When the school opts for a monster-themed dance, Frankie sees it as an opportunity for her to step out of the shadows and to learn if her classmates can really accept her for who she is. Melody may not be a member of the monster community, but when she falls for one, she must put aside her own fears and take a stand for doing the right thing. While not all readers will be drawn to a book with movie monsters as the main characters, the message of the story is one of girl empowerment and a sense of pride in oneself, regardless of physical appearance or family background—a message to which many teenage girls can relate. Both protagonists must reconcile with their outer awkwardness and recognize that true beauty really does come from within. Reviewer: Amanda Ledbetter
