Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The story of the Minotaur, the half-man and half-beast monster who devours 14 children from Athens each year, is the subject of this early reader book. A lottery determines which 14 will sail to Crete to face the Minotaur to appease an angry King seeking revenge for the death of his son. Although the text and paper cutout illustrations are compelling, this reviewer wondered throughout the book whether this story from Greek mythology was appropriate for the intended age group. Certainly, it is not appropriate for everyone, especially children prone to nightmares and those easily frightened. That said, this story will fascinate the early readers who can get beyond the grim portions of the tale and see it through to the (relatively) happy ending. Prince Theseus of Athens, with the help of Princess Ariadne of Crete, bravely slays the Minotaur and finds his way out of the maze. With this stroke of bravery, the children of Athens will never again be sent to die a bloody death in Crete. Parents, educators and caregivers must carefully consider the sensibilities of a child before giving or assigning this book to read. Of course, providing some context for the story will also help. This book is one in the publisher's "All Aboard Reading" series. 2000, Grosset & Dunlap, $13.89 and $3.99. Ages 6 to 8. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati
