    Think about it

Make no mistake I have had a blast collecting these monsters. I am biased to use them in D&D 4e.

There are far too many monsters to own them all and the packages are too varied to get a basic selection for heroic level game play. I have bought 6 or 7 packets and have only 3 kobolds and 2 goblins. Only recently did I get a death priest of Orcus. These are basic monsters for beginning level one play and I'm only getting them when my group is level seven!

I use the Mary Jane honey candies, nickels and pennies on the game board. I number them with little pieces of tape so I can track damage. My players cringe when the Mary Janes come out.

We still buy the miniatures anyway because it is so cool to take them out of the box the first time. We will play with them and then dive into another encounter with more enthusiasm. I'm starting to get enough of them that I have a variety of ranged, brutes, spell casters, and religious types. The categories are hampered by monster size so this isn't a consistent solution. Actual encounters emphasis a type with four or more monsters and I'd have to mix in the Mary Janes again. I guess I'll keep buying until I get a workable set.

My son got a beholder and over time the plastic post that holds it up is leaning to the side. The wings on the adult dragons are folding in on themselves. As a result I've set them on a shelf more protected from the window.

The miniature packs are sold with their own game system so you can do combat without a DM. It is a lot of fun but our set has one or two unbeatable monsters. Only new players will take the challenge and it is kind of sad when you see them realize they are gonna get clobbered and there is nothing they can do about it. Also, the miniature game monsters have different stats then what is printed in the monster manual.

Still, I expect I will buy more as I can afford them.
